I was wondering what some of you have used to saw through with yours.
I have used balsa wood and cardboard, but what tends to happen is a chunk will fall in the bottom slit. This makes it hard or stops blade going down in. Any suggestions or ideas you may have done with yours to prevent this would be appreciated. Thanks for all you guys time in advance!! |

I have not had that problem. What model are you using?

I had a friend make the Visible sawing of Robert Harbin's in the 1980's. It was beautiful when completed. Several years later, he sold it to Karroll Fox, when Karroll Fox was doing a lecture here locally.
Robert Harbin says to use 3" x 1/2" Balsa. Many things can cause the wood to splinter. Balsa is such a dense wood, and usually does not splinter to my knowledge. Wood not fitting snug enough in the holes. Wood not extending enough out of the holes to hold the piece firmly. Pressing down to hard while cutting. Let the saw do the work, just glide the blade back and forth, keep as level as possible. Blades have rusted or dulled over time, and need a little filing to sharpen. As these saw blades are not tempered. |

We always used Balsa with Blackstone. We tried to cut the pieces to fit snugly in the holes. Harry would stop after each level was cut and take it out to call attention to it.
The Owens's version does have the problem of getting wood or sawdust in the mechanism. Usually, it simply means cleaning it periodically. I consider that part of the routine of working an effect. I do believe that Wellington addressed this debris problem. But I cannot remember the details or heard any feedback from users as to how well it solved the problem. Richard
