Hello all,
Before I get into this brief review, a bit of background. I'm a full time magician and have been 12 years, working primarily schools and corporate events. Recently I've gotten tired of hauling around big props so I'm adopting the pack small, play big attitude. Over the last few months I have purchased a ton of mentalism stuff in an effort to play big without hauling all the crap. In short, it's taken me years to catch up to the most forward thinkers in our industry. I've purchased a lot of Osterlind stuff in the past and always like his direct approach to mentalism. I've been wanting to learn Contact Mind Reading for years. I purchased a DVD from another pro years ago and struggled with it and failed miserably. When I heard about Osterlind's new CMR book, I was very hopeful. The book is very well written and takes away a lot of the old classical ways of doing this art. Richard spends some time outlining his history, several different routines, ways to practice, breaking it down into key components and much more. In short, it's really a master piece on this performing art. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get it. It's very frustrating to me as I'm an accomplished hypnotist, both stage and clinical, and I'm a full time performer too. 'm beginning to feel as though this may be one of those things some people can get and others do not. However, if you are curious and want to give this a try, Richard's book will give you the best possible education, but know that this is not an easy skill to learn. Recommended as a great teaching aid, but CMR is HARD, at least for me. |

Update - I was asked in a private message to elaborate on how I didn't get it. As I worked with one fellow for a couple of hours, I thought I was zeroing in on the path of least resistance toward one of four objects, and I kept choosing the wrong object all but one time out of the dozens and dozens of attempts.
To reiterate: I feel this is by far the most detailed book on the subject out there. I just may have a learning disability for this subject, |

Another update: Richard himself contacted me and offered some personal guidance. I am blown away by that kind of customer service. I've always admired Richard as a performer but as a person? Incredible.
After his suggestions, I practiced 3 more times with my wife...who hates mentalism. I had her hide an object in our living room and the first two times I came close, and the third time I found it! And I was doubly nervous as my wife was grumbling the whole time wanting to get off her feet after work, etc. Osterlind is in a class by himself. I now feel a great deal of hope I'll be able to add this to a show! |

Wow that is great!
Good luck getting better at CMR! I recognize your story (at least the fail part... ). I have a love/hate relation with CMR because of the failing (I also tryed this on my wife and failed). Your message gave me positive energy and the courage to try this onces more. Thank you! |

Marc,
One thing I was WRONG for not mentioning is the fact that Richard teaches the reader a foolproof way to do this successfully each time. In essence, he gives you an "out" and I feel VERY badly for not mentioning that previously. Again, Richard is in a class by himself. To ALL readers - if you have any desire at all to learn CMR, BUY THIS BOOK! And in a private message, Richard told me he wants to make sure everyone who has an interest in CMR to be able to be successful at it. I've never received that kind of one on one encouragement from anyone else when I purchase a product. He's an inspiration! |

That is very kind of you to say, Cris, and I do appreciate it, but I am only trying to deliver on what I sell. When I wrote the book I sincerely wanted anyone reading it to learn how to do it. I tried to cover all ground, but sometimes a direct conversation is helpful.

Richard is truly a gentleman and a wonderful teacher. I really enjoyed his workshop at the last MindVention, and in particular his teachings on CMR. He had people who had never done it before NAILING it the very first time they performed it. He allowed some of those in attendance to just give it a go after teaching about it for a brief while. The first guy really had the object hid from him very well and he still found it after a bit of deliberation. The first guy even surprised himself. It was wonderful.

I second your comments, Curt (well, except for the kissing part, I wasn't there, LOL) But with Richard's help, today I practiced again with my wife's assistant from her hair salon and I found the object 3 out of 4 times! And truth be told, I would've found the 4th time too but I didn't trust the signals I was getting. I've got a ways to go but this is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy cool!

Richard goes far and beyond most performers... in products, presentations and performances. The guy is complete class. I'm never surprised when I hear these stories about him.

Osterlind also has a muscle reading video as part of the penguin 13 steps downloads. while I'm sure more is covered in the book, I'm curious what the difference in material taught is between the two products.
