Jeff Prace is back with one of the coolest updates in magic I have ever seen. Jeff has taken the standard Hot Rod effect and brought it into a modern age. Instead of using an outdated prop, you can now perform this effect using an object that everyone is familiar with... a standard Bic Pen!
Heres the description: The most innocent looking Hot Rod EVER! This pen combines the world's most iconic search engine logo and the Hot Rod methodology to create a prop that exerts innocence and performs well. A spectator selects one of the colors on the pen's multi-colored logo. In a flash, the entire logo changes into the selected color! The pen can be displayed on both sides and be handed out for examination at the end. INSIDE THE PACKAGE: -Hot Rod pen -Additional examinable pen -Written instruction by Genii columnist Jeff Prace Now I was lucky enough to be sent some of these pens before they were released and I have to say that in my opinion this is right up there with Chad Long's Flash when it comes to having a revolutionary update to a classic effect! I'm now carrying one of these on me at all times. I know some people might be put off by the fact that the logo says Coogle instead of Google, however I came up with a solution. If you take a knife blade and scratch on the logos, particularly the "C", it gives the appearance that the pen has faded over time. The best part is, if you can match your scratches on both the colored logo and the final logo they end up with, you have a great subtly of the ink really changing color. You can pick this up at Jeff's site or at any Murphy's Magic suplier! http://murphysmagic.com/Product.aspx?id=55794

I picked one of these up a while back just because I liked the idea of it.
If you're going to do a hot rod effect, this is the one to do IMO. |

If you know and enjoy the classic Hot Rod... you will like this new design. I carry one with me everywhere! I'd be happy to answer any questions. |

I got one this past Saturday at Midwest Magic and it's great! I've been carrying it around with me these past few days and have been having a lot of fun doing it for all kinds of people. The pen writes so I've been using it as a pen then can go into the trick before anyone realizes I'm doing a trick. One idea (of many) I've been playing with and using is talking about how they couldn't decide on a single color for the logo (casually displaying both sides of the multi colored logo) like say I don't know the purple (change to one color and show both sides) saying they just didn't think it looked as good and that's why the logo is multi colored (change it back to multi colored and put it back in your pocket). Makes it one of those magic effects that just happens as you're telling the story. Leaves people asking themselves did I just see what I saw?? This is a great versatile prop that can be used as a traditional hot rod also. Just a wonderful idea. Ill be picking up another few sets so I know I'll be able to do it for a long time.

Jeff has taken a funky magic prop that would seem out of place anywhere and has stood it on its head. The hot rod makes sense for the first time. Before you couldn't find a scenario that the Hot Rod would fit naturally, now it is just as hard to imagine a scenario that it wouldn't fit. A pen can be introduced into almost any setting including work, school, church, the grocery store, the mall, the hospital, or library. It is great for casual performances as well as walk around. Its versatility is what makes Jeff's innovation such a great idea.

Not exactly a new concept. I've had a hotrod pen for years. Penguin used to send them for free with orders over a certain price.

Thanks, guys! I'm happy you're getting use out of the prop. I have one next to me on my office desk right now.
Maddy - When I worked at Chicago's Midwest Magic, I sold a lot of those Magic Maker's Hot Rod pens. But it still doesn't look like an ordinary object. Placing six colored dots on a pen without context is illogical. This design will fit in. |

Whats even more illogical is counting to the force letter starting from the last letter as opposed to the first letter. |

On a similar note, there are certain presentations that don't even use a force at all. Jim Short has a nice one: "I got this pen, and since it says 'Google' I thought it might actually be a seach engine. I know: silly me. But I tried it. I did an image search for the pen cap and *this* happened..." The pen cap was purposely designed to match the force color to open presentation ideas. |

The Search Engine Pen – Jeff Prace
Product description : Bored of doing the classic hot rod ? How to justify this brass rod which doesn't look like anything on this planet ? Jeff Prace has found the solution : put the jewels, here it would be letters, on a pen ! So, is this trick an improvement on what already exists or can you just pass and keep your hot rod ? Let's find out ! Price and where to buy it : This is sold at $9.95 and you can find it in nearly every Murphy's magic partner ! What you get : You get a little plastic bag with inside : written instructions, pretty clear and easy to follow. A “gimmicked” pen and another one that can be handed out after a switch during the routine ! The whole thing feels quality, pen actually writes and works as a charm. Happy with what I received. Teaser : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtzGz8XjX98 The pros and the cons : Here is the core of my review, let's begin with the cons, as I will usually be doing, I prefer to keep the good things for the end. THE CONS : Errr.. I can't find any con except maybe that you can't do the trick twice since it will always be the same color at the end. Another little con is the way, as with every hot rod routine, you get to the color you want. THE PROS : The price ! It's under $10 !! Some downloads are more expensive so this is a steal compared to the reactions you can get doing this routine. The pen are Bic pen so the quality is very good and the letters on it don't seem to scratch off very easily so this is a good point ! The cap of the pen was made the same color as the one which will be chosen by the spectator so you can play on the whole “do you think you can be influenced by things you don't look at” blablabla and I find this genius. You won't believe how people can trust you when it comes to something they “know” (the influence of things). I love play on this and the pen helps me a lot doing it. You only have to carry one pen so the pocket management is very good ! I won't be carrying the second pen, I don't feel the need doing a switch during the routine. The thing is now justified ! You can build the routine around google and the way adds work etc.. I really liked the fact he used a very famous brand to put on the pen. Overall rating : Guys, get this, it's a no brainer. $10 for an excellent routine, well motivated with quality props, you won't find any better. 4/4 hearts for me and a big recommandation. As for the difficulty level, the classic paddle move, 2/5 stars. Similar products : I think the classic hot rod is still a good thing since some of them allow you to do 3 color change while the pen here only allows you 2. But since the whole thing is much more motivated, I will carry the Search Engine Pen with me now. Thanks to Murphy's for sending me this product ! Has Google granted the rights to use (and alter) their logo?
I know they are very particular about their IP. I wouldn't want to buy the trick if it's not. Please clarify. Cheers J

Their standard approach is on their website...
"We get requests from lots of entrepreneurs who have an idea for a new T-shirt design, toy, software packaging or other imaginative product that incorporates the Google logo or a Google product. Unfortunately, we cannot grant permission for these uses. " Let's wait for an answer. I can't risk using this and being called on it at a corporate show if the rights haven't been granted.

Copyright/trademark lawyers have been consulted before manufacturing this product. The essence of trademark infringement is consumer confusion. "The goal is to protect consumers, not to protect trademarks. Therefore, even if the marks in question are quite similar, but there is no real likelihood that consumers will be confused, then there would be no harm."
However, if you are uncomfortable using this product, I urge you not to purchase it and spend your money on something more fitting for you. |

I'm confused.
Are you saying the logo on the pen is different from the actual Google logo in a way that people won't get the two confused? I need to be clear as I would use this in corporate work and I can't risk a Google exec taking issue with it. Thanks J

Jamie -
Trademark infringement protects the consumer. Your audiences are not the consumer of this product; you are. As I said, if you are having legitimate concerns about using this product in your work, I advise you to use a different product. (We all know there is not a short supply...) I have consulted my lawyers on the issue and proceeded. If you'd like to discuss further, please feel free to e-mail me. |
