I was wondering, those mentalists out there who incorporate readings as part of their performances, what tools do you use?
Tarot? Cartomancy? Runes? My own personal reading tool is currently on Kickstarter ( http://kck.st/1RJgfeJ ), and is a symbol deck I use for readings and also a number of drawing dupe style routines. But I was curious that other people were using!

I love readings and tools are often very useful when structuring up a reading. Depending on how long the reading should be, I need different tools. The most optional tool for me is the hand and a palm reading. Thanks to the different lines, the fingers and shape of the hand I got tools for 40 minutes reading. In a ordinary playing card I can do a reading in five to ten minutes, then I need another card. In a playing card I have first the color then the suite the number. BUT I don't use for example the clubs as a stock reading. I use the clubs to get access to my real tools. Behind the clubs I can talk about a strong family (the shape of a tree), different perspective, introvert feelings that are kept inside bubbles, the life path with different crossroads, different opportunities in the shape of the chambers in the club, and so on. But after a while the card have been used and then I need another one. With Tarot it is the same. You have the "known" truth about the card, but it also open doorways to the real cold reading.
I have done readings in runestones, crystals and tea leafs. The only important thing for me is that there is something that get my intuition to go. Recently I have started to use an effect by Stephen Young. A brilliant deck of cards that contains loads of different pictures from the real world. Also a good tool. But on the other hand, I can take an egg and crack it, then do a reading out of the looks of the spoiled egg and if I smash the eggshell as well, I got ten minutes more. My best tip for anyone is to learn a real tool that helps to make readings out of everything. Luke Jermays Tarot alphabet is brilliant, The metaprograms in NLP is also amazing and of course the MBTI-system as well. The key with MBTI is to use the tools intuitive and not categorically. |

Iain - My oracle deck is something I designed specifically to be instantly accessible to everyone. The symbols carry inherent meaning that almost anyone can interpret, and creates powerful and interactive group experiences. It really speaks to me in opening up the process and making it more inclusive and fun.
Cbring - Great thoughts. I think understanding how to read symbols regardless of the tool is a good backbone of any reading tool. For me Enrique Enriquez's work on the tarot and reading systems has been invaluable. It is such powerful stuff.

Watching Enrique describe his approach at a Tabula a while back made me excited about doing Tarot, and I don't even do Tarot. It's a fascinating approach.

You guys can use this as an idea for fun or entertainment. The name of the book is Asian face reading. I havn't used it yet so maybe my opinion is not what you were after but as soon as I practice a little I'll hit the streets.

The Marseille Tarot for me - partly because of my frequent talks with Enrique - but, most importantly, it is an oracle for connection & conversation. Those images pop up all around us - the actions in the cards are actions we all recognize - and so we find connections with those images in ourselves. I don't know if this has anything to do with the subconscious or not - I think it has something more to do with popular consciousness.
More than that, it is a game. It's a game of charades, of bluff, of chance - all those things. Using it as a form of connect-the-dots, within the context of the querent's question (& allowing them to do that by their own self), is greatly rewarding. Because of the Tarot, I no longer look for or work toward 'hits'. I look for flow, for exchange & for availability.

I was not happy/comfortable with any of the systems readily available,
so I developed my own which MarcO so kindly mentioned a couple of popsts up from this one. I believe it is the most intuitive and believable tool on the market. http://www.thoughtillusions.com/phopsypro.html steve |

I am starting to use Graphology as the system for doing brief readings in mentalism performance. I find it interesting, and no audience perceives the method as spooky. Of the several things I have read, I have found Ariel Frailich's "Reading Writing" to be the most useful introduction to doing some handwriting analysis (more than enough for performance mentalism), with a good section of suggested effects for mentalists and magicians.
Oh, in response to a post above: NO symbols have "intrinsic meaning." Groups and societies agree on what a symbol will mean or refer to; then they use the symbol to communicate within their community of discourse. George |

One thing I like about the Oracle deck idea is that because it isn't a widely known established system, no one can tell you you're doing it wrong, like some people mightsay with Tarot, or another widely studied system.

Symbols are entirely personal...our own world filter comes into play, along with our biases...
I did think about setting up a group in London, so people who give readings in whatever format could pop along, read for each other and so on...but I don't think that is a good idea, realistically speaking...

Whenever a Seeker makes statement the bowl is lifted and the spider runs about. Its actions are interpreted by the Seer, leading to an eventual solution to the Seeker's problem. The "secret" is that the Seer test's the Seeker's reactions until "all lies are stripped away." -- may take hours. If one takes the view that any Seeker's first response to any symbol is only a partial truth (often unconsciously) then amazing 'readings" can be achieved. The earliest method I have discovered is using an irregular stone. The Seeker thinks about their problem and looks at each side or face of the stone and describes what they see in the patterns and texture. The answers can then allow the Seer to select the best "symbolic set" for the actual divination. Of course, I am speaking of legitimate divination and not performance for entertainment. but, the idea of using some symbolic pre-test may be valuable in such a performance in which the Seer can select from a variety of "methods" such as Tarot, Runes, photos or tea leaves, etc. to meet the situation.

Personally, I prefer to "do it for real", which is in my opinion cold reading, no tools. I am, however, able to do readings with tarot cards, writing, palms/hands etc.
As in 13 Steps described, this kind of propless mind reading is the best thing we can achieve.

I use the Osho tarot deck as I find the images easy to relate to. Another advantage is the fact that the images are not scary for the sitter. I have been reading the tarot for 30 odd years so it was a bit strange getting used to these cards but now I can't use anything but the Osho cards.

The right oracle is entirely a personal choice. Comments here might serve to guide one to investigate new and novel options, but at the end of the day the choice is entirely your own. You go with what feels comfortable. As you progress in the readings, something quite interesting happens. You discover that you are increasingly relying on ever more esoteric interpretations of the oracle. You are not relying on 'cold reading' per se, nor in Barnum statements or whatever. Somehow you just know what to say. Unique, specific things come to mind you cannot account for; ideas that prove correct in dramatic ways you never expected. You are unknowingly acquiring valid information in unexplained ways. Like it or not, you become 'psychic' by definition whether you like it or not.

Friends:
Sorry to be the odd man out here, but the meaning of a symbol is neither intrinsic NOR essentially up to each individual person. A verbal symbol like "3" enables all of the people of a culture to communicate with each other IF they all attach the same referent to that symbol and countless others. A verbal symbol like "swami," or "ESP," makes it possible for all of the members of our subculture to communicate with each other. Visual symbols function similarly. The Third Reich hijacked the symbol of the Swastika and attached a meaning that became shared among many Germans; Jewish and Roma people also had shared meanings of the symbol. The symbol of the Confederate flag flying in the South Carolina capitol is a big issue today, in part because (at least) two communities attach contrasting meanings to the symbol. Sorry to get so professorial. I'll try to get over it. George |
