As you may know, every few months I organise a collaborative creative contest - aiming to have a bit of fun and get our creative juices flowing.
For a flavour of the previous contests, please check here: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=14 And here: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=14 And here: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=14 And here: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=14 And here: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=14 The format: I suggest a theme. Entrants send me a routine, an effect, a work of art, a script, a poem or a story inspired by that theme. Text-based entries should be sent in Word Doc, TXT or RTF format. NOT PDF. Please NOT PDF. I have to retype PDF entries manually and that's a ball-ache! If you're sending images, especially if they're "printable props", consider sending them as image files rather than embedding them in the document. This will help to preserve their resolution. I compile all the entries in a beautiful PDF. Every entrant receives a copy of the PDF as a reward for taking part. The only way to receive this PDF is to submit an idea. Every entrant will also receive something extra - a physical prize. And one lucky submission will also earn an extra special bonus prize. This person is deemed to have "won" and can perform their preferred victory dance. The theme: Seance. This one is a biggie. I'm hoping it inspires you all to break out your big guns of creativity. How you choose to explore this topic is left entirely to you. A demonstration of spirit contact? A tutorial on making the perfect seance prop/accessory? A spirit-themed magic effect? Or tales from the trenches of your theatrical seance experiences. A story, a method, a disturbing true live account - all of these will be welcome. The chilling air of the seance chamber is your playground. Go crazy and see what manifests. The rules: Send entries to totalcult[AT]gmail[DOT]com Subject Line: "Seance Submission" Closing date for sending entries: 12 noon, Greenwich Mean Time, Friday, July 17th. ( http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/uk/greenwich-city ) Text-based entries should be sent in Word Doc, TXT or RTF format. NOT PDF. Please NOT PDF. I have to retype PDF entries manually and that's a ball-ache! If you're sending images, especially if they're "printable props", consider sending them as image files rather than embedding them in the document. This will help to preserve their resolution. Judging: Like a possessed planchette, my criteria for picking "the winner" move in mysterious ways. However, previous contests have taught me that there is no prize I can bestow that will match the brilliance of the PDF - that's where the gold lies, in the ideas you guys share. So there are no losers, because everyone gets the top prize, the PDF.

So glad you've fired up the collaborative again, Mat.
If you haven't taken part before, you're missing out on one of the absolute best things on the boards. These 'contests' are collaborative watershed moments. A chance to really break through on some new ideas, blow the dust off some old ones, and to pick up some inspiration from others. They have been a great motivator for me in the past. I think the greatest gift that MatCult can give us is a deadline -- something you've got to scramble for and work to make happen. It's not for profit, dues or ticket sales, just a little mysterious club that rises up every now and again to challenge and inspire. Then he lovingly curates the whole thing and packages it up for us. That PDF, it really is a marvel. One creative sound wave begets another. It's like a pdf-shaped echo chamber where we're all singing different tunes in the same key. No dissonance, just a cacophony of ideas. It's true, I am going off a little, aren't I? Well, I'm hoping that this is one of the biggest ones yet. Let's have an international spooky think tank hootenanny that will live on in Wish-I-Had-Submitted infamy. This a theme that we can all attack in host of ways. I say bring it, Spookies! I don't know what I'm going to contribute yet -- I'm still staring at the mirror, waiting for inspiration to strike -- but I hope that you'll join up too. Perkins

Thanks Perkins!
Okay. Now as I say every single time, this thing isn't about the prizes. There is nothing out there to match the PDF as a goldmine of wonders. BUT.... BUT... This time, we may prove that to be wrong. I can now announce that this latest contest will be brought to you in association with the mighty "Seances and Spookshows Podcast" and "Parlour Ghost". Both of these spooky institutions have offered to provide extra prizes for the uber-winner, over and above the package I am currently putting together. And the prizes they're offering are beauties. Further incentive, if any were needed, to get involved...

I'll be submitting a very unique and interesting routine called "Summoning Rumi", wherein contact is made with a great historical spiritual figure to answer some of life's deepest and most philosophical questions, which ultimately results in several unexpected and visually haunting surprise climaxes... Sitters are sure to remember this memorable and emotionally-moving, multi-dimensional phenomenon!! Tried, tested and true!!

Messages are already coming in, across the divide. I don't think I've ever had so many entries so far ahead of the deadline. And we already have a couple of fresh, first time contributors. Exciting times!

I have a suggestion. I suggest that you attend a real Spiritualist Seance before you write about one. I think these contests are great but in this instance I think that a person needs some authentic background before telling everyone else how seances work and all that spooky fun. IMHO It's
kind of like making up a poem and saying it's a Rosary. You see....Ignorant people may believe you, but those in the know will see the difference. I'm not being a party pooper, as I've freely contributed myself, but I'm beginning to see the cracks in the vase here. (As far a Spiritualism goes)

Slim,
I have attended spitualist séances, along with more than a decade spent making a living in the shut eye world. In all that time I reached a simple conclusion, most spiritualism is lousy as a form of entertainment. Most modern spiritualists just do platform readings, with physical mediumship out of favour in all but a few strongholds. So I am wondering what the good folks here are meant to learn about séance as a form of entertainment from attending spiritualist séances? Brynmore |

A recent surge in my interest of Houdini (Thanks to a visit to the Copperfield museum ) has prompted me to look deep into the Spiritualist beliefs and since I live less than an hour from Cassadaga I have made a dozen or more trips there attending Seances and readings from those who profess to be the real thing. As far as entertainment goes, they were far from moving experiences as Bryn has pointed out, HOWEVER a traditional Seance with a Trance Medium and a Spirit Guide is indeed the real deal.(If you believe there is such a thing)
My pet peeve is that people performing a theatrical seance try to pawn it off as a real one. Penn and Teller (and I love their non-exposure comedy) sitting around a burning candle with a magician pretending to be a medium is just foolish. It's NOT a seance ... it's not even LIKE a seance. So when they say ... "This seance FAILED (Houdini never showed up)" ... that's pretty much a joke. I'm attempting to negotiate recording a video of a really good Trance Medium and his or her (Performance) Seance..

Well to be fair, many of the Houdini séances make for lousy entertainment too. Psicop particularly springs to mind.
Nothing like Cassadaga, Lilyvale, Chesterfield et al, exists in my neck of the woods. If they did I'd be there in a heart beat. I agree that if behoves us to do our homework. |

Okay. So I have started work on compiling the PDF. In fact I have got everything submitted so far into the document.
We are already looking at over 60 pages. And there is some real gold in there. Just saying...
