Hi,
I am looking to buy a card duck or educated duck prop and am noticing that there are several different ones at different prices though they all look pretty much alike. Do any of you own this piece and can you steer me in the right direction as to which one would be the nicest in quality? Thanks in advance!

Some are made in India, and some are made in China.

The Indian and Chinese ducks are OK - but nowhere near the quality and reliability of a Hamilton card duck. They are no longer made or sold commercially - BUT, if you are patient you can certainly score one on eBay, the buy and sell forum here or Surplus Magic Exchange. It would be well worth your time to hold out for a Hamilton! (I should know - I own 55 different models of the card duck and am working on a book about this great prop!)

Thank you for the great replies. I will consider all of them.
Rhett, please let us all know when you book is available. Sounds really interesting. 55 different models?!?! Wow! You should post a picture of them here some day. Thanks again everyone!

For American Made card ducks - Viking makes a GREAT one and the Owens duck is a gem as well (although pretty expensive)

As requested - here is a line-up of several of my 55 card ducks and variations (Geese, Fifi’s, Penguins and Dragons!) On the very end (left) is the ORIGINAL - Ireland Card Duck approx. 1936. He has a tea strainer for a handball ball for a head.

This is an Indian card duck, now Mme Calliope, the only tarot reading wooden duck in Spring Grove Pa!

Mcharisse - NICE adaptation of the standard Indian card duck! Senator Crandall was, I think, the first person to “dress her up” which certainly does add character to the prop and performance.

Robert.... There was a card swan that was made (likely in either small numbers or a one of a kind) in England that may pre-date the Ireland “original” duck.

The work that Gene Morrell did for Ken Brooke predates the card ducks (The Monkey Tells), and would make an excellent (and easy to construct) Card Swan or Brontosaurus or turn most any other animal of your choice into a card "eater."

The Hamilton Card Duck iis probably the best ever made. Magic Inc as you all know had a very good card duck. Viking make is probably the one to get if you can't find a Hamilton make.

Be aware there are a couple of incarnations of genuine Hamilton Card Ducks and not all are hallmarked/stamped.

John Shirley, puppeteer, made beautiful card ducks that you could not tell from Hamilton. Karl Norman made good ones, large and small. His paint job was nothing near Hamilton's but it worked fine. He gave me all his templates and such for his model. Just never got around to making any.
