I'm typically not a big fan of escapes for children shows, but this routine (Doug Scheer's "Houdini's Squirt Gun Escape") has plenty of fun built into it so I give it two thumbs up. In short, the magician escapes from shackles while being squirted with water guns. The magician wears a mask and snorkel (some good comedy here), and all the bits of escaping and re-securing the shackles happen as the magician moves about, taunting the kids while being squirted. If you are looking for some fun, give it this routine a try.

I am in Detroit. Parents do not like to see a child holding a gun around here. I also made twisted balloons guns and swords at times. The client told me not to makes any more of those shapes.
Guns are reminders to killings in Detroit. At a block club party last weekend were multiple gun shots. Several injured and one dead. I was performing at a block club party a few years ago where gun shots occurred. I see no problem having children holding guns in other cities. But not Detroit. |

Good point on the gun. As a parent and teacher, I think the idea of a squirt gun that clearly does not resemble a gun is acceptable. However, I am sensitive to the concerns and worries in various places where guns are a problem. An alternative, which Doug Scheer is using, is the spray bottles (available in different colours)that one would use to spray their hair or use for watering plans or cleaning around the house.
Like any routine, one needs to modify things to suit their style and where they will perform it. Cheers, John |
