Does anyone know of any Wizard of Oz themed effects or routines?? In thinking about the film and its wonderful story loaded with magik and enchantment, and am intrigued to know if anyone has created any magik based on it??
Moreover, if you are like me, and see the endless potential and possibilities for some bizarre pieces centered around the plot and story, then you owe it to yourself to check out the very, very BIZARRE sequel Return to Oz starring Fairuza Balk of The Craft fame, which picks up where the Wizard of Oz leaves off, yet hurls the story it into a surreal, nightmarish and haunting context, with an eerie and rather dark theme. The whole movie is like one big bizarre magik play, especially in terms of its nervous content, strange characters, antique props, insomnia, psychiatric institution, WHEELERS!!!, Wizard of Oz ephemera, and deliciously creepy story line! Honestly I can't say enough about this film, which essentially takes the original Wizard of Oz and drags it forward through a bleak apocalyptic graveyard of sorts, reminiscent of a Pompeii-like fantasyland. It has a kinda Tim Burton feel to it... This sequel is the perfect opposite of the lively and innocent first movie: Quote:
Dorothy, saved from a psychiatric experiment by a mysterious girl, is somehow called back to Oz when a vain witch and the Nome King destroy everything that makes the magical land beautiful. Quote:
It has been six months since Dorothy has returned home from Oz and she still cannot sleep. She has been going on about imaginary places and people so much that Aunt Em takes her to see a doctor. She promptly escapes from the mental hospital and wakes up in Oz where her pet chicken, Billina, can now talk. There she meets a whole new bunch of friends and they set off to rescue the Scarecrow from the evil Nome King who has found her ruby slippers and has used them to lay waste to the Emerald City and take over Oz. Check out the following trailers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TD36AXBxMgY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNfSrDXWHG8 Anyways, to restate my original question... Has anyone ever come across any Wizard of Oz themed effects or routines?? Thanks...

Robert Harbin developed a growth of flowers illusion for use in a production of a stage play of "The Wizard of OZ." We used his principles in adapting our version of a botania that visibly grows a large number of realistic flowers on a bare stalk, found in The Wizards' Journal #14 under the name "Flower Power."

Everyone has forgotten the "Perfessor" and his scene with Dorothy at his "medicine show" wagon in which he uses his crystal to scry!!
Can you not think of any fortune-telling, mentalism prediction effects...???

Spellbinder has an effect called "Magic Story Cards" in The Wizards' Journal #25, that he uses to tell the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, but which can be adapted for a variety of story-telling effects including stories from the Wizard of Oz. Qua-Fiki has a set of "Magic Story Books" in "Qua-Fiki's Corner" in which a book with blank pages begins to fill up with pictures and text to tell a story apparently changing randomly by the listeners who make decisions on how the story should flow before the next page picture and text appears. This also could be adapted for a magical re-telling of the Wizard of OZ.

If you want to go super dark - how about playing on the myth of the hanging munchkin?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8YVeMwhDNI http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/5242160.stm And, I know, it's widely reported to be a hoax, but if it's really not a body - how come they (rather ineffectively) digitally edited it out of subsequent DVD re-issues? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r89z_-1b......Ay4ptZaw

I just ordered! I can't wait to see how well the Oz Oracle deck works with some of my Tarot Card effects (The Crafty Shoppe of Little Horrors on The Magic Nook - Book 2). I couldn't resist ordering the matching carrying pouch as well! Perhaps I can save up for the OZ Tarot Mat.

Slim, I think the first time I saw it, I was about 6 years old... I'll be honest it is a "dark" and creepy film and might cause a child to have nightmares especially if watched right before going to bed. YET it is by no means a horror movie... It's a PG rated Disney flick from the 80s, so it is family-oriented. I grew up pretty fast and can tell you it left an indelible mark on my psyche, not in a bad way, rather I'm kinda obsessed with the movie, definitely one of my favorites. I guess it depends on the child. If he is sensitive and prone to anxiety, nervousness and/or nightmares then I would say save it till he gets a couple years older... If not, then I'm sure he'll really enjoy it, despite the fact it is a little grim and trippy. Hope this helps...

The Wonderland Dollar DVD by Nick Brown. The Bonus Section, Nick uses a poster from The Wizard of Oz. Spectator holds-on to a flap on the poster. You fold then un-fold the poster and the poster has turned itself around. Spectator never lets go of the flap.

I received my deck of OZ Oracle Cards and the cloth case. The cloth case is too small to hold the entire deck of cards, but it would be useful to hold packets of cards, or to make a selected card or a few appear in the case after vanishing from the deck, etc.

From "Tarot Card Magic", Book 2 of the Crafty Shoppe of Little Horrors, my variation of Annemann's "Insto-Transpo" that I call "Tarot Transposition" works well with the OZ cards. Have fifteen or so cards chosen from the deck at random (face down) and place them on the table in the shape of a large letter "O" for Oz. The spectator chooses any of the cards to represent him or herself, and chooses a repositional color dot from a pad to mark with initials and attach to the face of the card chosen. The card is then inserted (by the spectator) into a transparent card holder (construction is described in the e-Book) and worn on a ribbon around the neck of the spectator. Then YOU choose a card to represent yourself, choose a different color dot from the repositional dot pad, mark it with your initials and place it on the face of the card you have chosen. This card is then placed into a second transparent card holder to hang from a ribbon around your neck. After the appropriate "mumbo-jumbo" the spectator discovers the two cards (and their marked dots) have changed places and the spectator can remove both cards without a clue as to how it happened. It's up to the OZ Oracle to explain it all in terms of the chronicles of OZ. The cards are not harmed by the temporary attachment of a repositional sticky-note or dot. The deck's Joker Cards can be used to make the necessary gimmick.
