No one is banning it. They're simply demanding that it not fly over government buildings or appear on government issued materials like license plates.
I agree with Lewis Black. Racists should be allowed to fly it on their own property or wear it on their shirts. |

As compassionate members of society we should take a moment to remember that this was a hard week for hateful old white people.

I remember many years ago there was a Canadian based restaurant chain. "Bugaboo Creek" which tried to fly a Canadian flag over their restaurant as part of the atmosphere that you were in a Canadian hunting lodge. A group of conservatives lost it and demanded they take that flag down and fly the American flag! (It was a long time ago, it's possible that they were flying the Canadian flag OVER an American Flag.)

No. Ir'a really simple- the government has not banned the private ownership and display of Confederate flags. It is perfectly legal to own or display them.
You can own Nazi flags as well. |

Oh I’m ok with that.
The word ban has a different meaning to some. Sorry for the confusion. Tom

It's no big deal really.
But when Bob and others said, 'nobody' banned it, here I am thinking: Didn’t amazon and ebay officially put a ban on selling the flag. Tom

Items have meaning, and have different meanings to different people. As someone who grew up in the south, I have seen many confederate flags: some hoisted on poles in front of peoples homes, some folded and displayed in cars, and many other presentations. For most of the southerners who displayed the flag it was simply a statement of an affection for the south and southern culture. It was not a statement of a desire to return to the Civil War, not a wish that the south had won the Civil War and therefore we could still have slavery. For the vast majority of people I have known it had no racial meaning at all. And I state that having grown up in the 70s in an area with a lot of racism. However, for some people it is very representative of their racist views. I have known many people with very strong racist views, including several who were and are members of the KKK. I had a neighbor growing up who today is very active in leadership in the Klan. To him the Confederate flag is a racist symbol, though he would describe it with different terms. My experience is that racist people see the flag as a symbol of their racist beliefs. People who are not racist see it as a symbol of southern pride, which to them is more cultural. As with many items, the meaning others associate with it will be determined by how it is most often presented to the public. In this case, those who do not see it as a racist symbol are not marching in the streets or holding meetings that get news coverage. Typically, the Confederate flag is presented in a negative way to the public, as a result that is the general meaning associated with it. I know people who love living in the South, love southern culture, would even consider some display of a confederate flag as being appropriate but will not do so for fear of people thinking they are racist. It is an unfortunate association, but a very real association. The swastika did not originate with Nazi Germany but will forever be associated with them and their ideology. You cannot display a swastika without being labeled with that group. For now the same is true with the Confederate Flag, though that position is not always accurate since some give it a different meaning.

Any flag or anything else might be a symbol or not a symbol as the case may be. The magic of symbols works by way of initiation and thus a symbol can have different meanings to different people or none ay all. So it is complete utter nonsense to say that those who fly this flag are racist. One must know what it means to them who fly it to know if they are racist or not.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Just because someone uses a symbol in a different context doesn't mean it loses the meaning it originally held |
