As a part of history, the symbols of it (including the confederate flag) belong in a museum where we can ask ourselves why we as a nation let this happen. If you fly that flag on the government buildings today, you're making a statement about today. This whole forum topic has sometimes gotten into who is racist and who is not, which unfortunately sidesteps the need end racism overall which has been so deeply ingrained into us that yes... many of us white people played cowboys and Indians, we laughed at racist humor, listened to Lynnard Skynner with the big confederate flag, ate Aunt Jemima pancakes, etc... and didn't compain until now. But NOW is the time to complain and put these things away. btw, another post mentioned how the topic has tended to divide our magic community ... but I disagree. It's one of the things I love about this particular forum. As long as we don't name-call, we engage with each other, and sometimes disagree fiercely; with friction comes a little light for all of us. I agree about racism, but what I don't agree on is the the confederate flag means racism.
Reality is a real killjoy.

Does anyone look at the issue this way, or am I the only one?:
Any and all "Confederate" flags are of a nation that was at war with the United States of America. It is in the same category as the flags of the United Kingdom, Mexico, Irag, Nazi Germany, Japan, North Korea, North Viet Nam, ISIS, the Taliban (if they have a flag,) etc. Why should ANY of those be flown over ANY federal or state or local government facility in the United States? Except for Embassies of the above, why should ANY of those flags be flown anywhere in the United States - excepting of course an individual's right to do it on his own property? I own genuine Nazi items that were brought back as souvenirs. I don't put them out for public display but they have personal and historic significance for me and my family. As far as selling them: There are stores that sell bags of cowshit. Bad taste, tastes bad, whatever. People have run sex-toy shops out of their towns while others have allowed them in theirs. I imagine they can decide about the flags for themselves too. |

If I were to agree with you. Then we would both be wrong. As of Apr 5, 2015 10:26 pm I have 880 posts. Used to have over 1,000

So you seem to have an issue with poor white people?

Well put Randwill. Just as a large majority of Americans favored gay marriage, so too does a large majority (including many Republican presidential candidates) agree that the Confederate flag is a symbol of slavery, subjugation and suppression and should not be displayed on public property.

Why is it that racists always seem to accuse everyone who opposes their views of being racist? Kind of like- Whenever a sentence begins with "I'm not a racist, but...," or "I'm not prejudiced, but...," you can rest assured that whatever follows will be racist or prejudiced.
But as an addendum to my last post: Since the Confederate flag is indeed symbolic of slavery, subjugation and oppression, it is indeed a racist symbol. Why else do you think the KKK and other neo-Nazis and white supremacist groups all fly it with pride? Because they believe in equality for all without regard to race, color or creed? |

I in no way feel blacks are inferior to whites now or 200 years ago. Don't judge all by a few because you have a chip on your shoulder. Better you should know the individual before jumping to conclusions. I do not believe in something for nothing. Everything I own I have earned. My grand parents had it rough when they came over here. Probably no where near as bad as the black slaves but still they had it tough. They did not get hand outs but worked in the mines. My grand father died from black lung. They did not have teachers worrying about if their kids could speak English. They had to survive because this was the land of opportunity. They did. They also came here legally.
