Labeling a black couple as "gorillas" seems pretty offensive to me.

"The error was brought to its attention by a New York-based software developer who was one of the people pictured in the photos involved"

Not sure I believe this excuse. If true, how did it make it on the Internet?
Sounds fishy to me.

Why does it matter that they are black?

You have to ask?

Maybe I'm missing something.
Are we accusing a machine of being a racist? Please tell me this is a joke?

We ought to be happy that facial recognition is fallible for the better it is the worse.

Facial recognition is an extremely powerful and dangerous technology. All is number and the number we call our face can be read and we know how such has been used in the past:

Then it would be silly and funny.

On the other hand, black athletes have had bananas thrown at them by fans. They're not throwing ants; they're throwing bananas. Why do you suppose that is?

So, is it the computer AI that is racist, the programmer who wrote the AI that is racist, or the Google corp that published the software that is racist? I'm not sure.

Of course not. The computer is not racist, and there's no reason to assume that the programmers are. The output--even if unintentional--is offensive and hurtful. Google is right to apologize and to take steps to correct the error.

You're right, of course.

The problem is that (certain) people will likely overreact to the incident.

Well if you can blame guns for killing people...do the math.
If I were to agree with you. Then we would both be wrong. As of Apr 5, 2015 10:26 pm I have 880 posts. Used to have over 1,000

Probably because they were racists and grew up in families that didn't teach respect and courtesy.
But we're talking about a face recognition machine. Lets stay focused.
