Used to get lost in Dr. John's voodoo-style music in the Acid Days. I especially liked the song Walk On Guilded Splinters from the Gris-Gris album.

Saw Dr John back then at the Fillmore. wow. Also saw the Crazy World of Arthur Brown ... his song "Fire" was performed with jumping off the stage with his hair on fire. There's a youtube out there showing his act with a kind of flaming crown ... and that might have been what I really saw. But wow, that was bizarre, and really good. These days, even though I'm more into jazz and blues, I enjoy listening to and watching Buckethead! Bizarre at its very best! Lynn

The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown!!!!
Great! If I'm not wrong Twink was on drum, he made a record "Think Pink" which contains great (and totally weird, don't expect "Sgt. Pepper" here!) psychedelic music. And talking about 60's weird genious what about Captain Beefheart? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqRHr5pEIFU (this is from the 80's) |

Loved the video.
Never got into Dr. John. Seems Frank Zappa and Dr. John did some music together. I've always been into Zappa, with or without the Mother's of Invention. -Iven

Yes, Dr John played on a track of the incredible "Freak Out!" but I can't remember the title...

Captain Beefheart also did some collaborations with Frank Zappa. And speaking of the latter, I was privileged to see Zappa performing live a couple of times. Once, around 1976, while the band was playing at a theater in Boston, part of the lighting rig collapsed onto Ruth Underwood's marimbas, and the PA system went completely dead. But instead of stopping, Zappa just kept on playing, accompanied only by the (unmiked) drummer. As they got more and more "into it", Zappa stepped to the front of the stage and improvised an extended, unplanned guitar solo, which went on until the crew finally got the sound system working again. I had never heard him stretch out like that on guitar before -- either live or on a recording. It was fabulous!
In addition, what also impressed me about Zappa's live performances is that he often completely rearranged his songs. For example, a song which appeared on one of his albums as a funk-styled groove, was reinterpreted live as a country shuffle. And a tune which was recorded featuring a rock groove became a jazz riff when played live, etc. |

Hey, Gregor, I remember Arthur Brown! Who can forget his single, Fire?
Before I left South Africa for the Land of the Free, I was in a band called Hocus. Mutt Lange was our bass player and his first wife, Stevie van Kerken, was our singer. They left for England shortly before my departure to the USA, so that Mutt could pursue his producing career. One of the first jobs Stevie landed was as a back-up singer for Arthur Brown's live performances. Jack Straw: You mentioned that one of my ex-bosses recorded Walk On Guilded Splinters with Humble Pie. Do you know, I never knew that?!! |
