I have a 3 shell routine where I switch one shell for one of a different color, to help the spectators follow the pea (yeah right). Has anyone else used this? I have another (idea only at present) where the spectator assists in moving the shells (the one without the pea..although with the bottom ridge shell it could contain a pea). Any previous references to either of these? The different colored shell is a killer. Would also appreciate any ideas on either of these to make a super strong routine. Thanks Dick

Magicrcook,
I have sold shell sets with an extra shell of a different color on request, so yes some are doing the different color shell in their routine and can be fun. As for the spectator moving the shells with the bottom ridge shells; after the spectator has lost a few times, I have the shells lined up for them to shuffle the shells. Where they should be able to keep track of the shell with the pea, by them shuffling them. I place a shell over the pea, without any extra movement. The hand never touches the surface. The other two shells are lifted and placed back down the same, where they are just shown to be empty. I have the spectator shuffle them around on the surface till I tell them to stop. Then I have them lift the shell that they think has the pea. They will be wrong, so they lift the other two shells that are also empty. I mention; "The pea is a little green at working with others. The pea might have gotten scared and ran home." I have them look in the barrel pea holder and it has the pea. The barrel had not been touched after the pea was taken out of the barrel before the game even started. The barrel had been shown empty and sat aside to start the game. What I like about this ending surprise is it is set up at the beginning and the barrel had been shown empty before placing it out of the play area. I also think the spectator having some hands-on play brings a lot of fun. Everything that is done looks very fair. At the end, you are clean and everything can be fully examined without switching anything out. If you want to know more on how I do this, send me a PM. Hope this helps some. Al

I have tried most shell makers. I feel Shellgame-Al makes some the best shells and peas on the market today, (www.3shells.com) I have a large collection of his shells. But he is in the U.S.
I believe he has the best quality, best designs, something for everyone and does custom work too. He makes all of his shells and peas in-house. He has the largest selection of Shell sets and accessories you will find and is always coming up with something new. I have both Bottom Ridge Shells and Classic Shells from him. I prefer using BRS most of the time because they have more advantages for me. Also great customer service. I also do magic for kids and adults. He also has some great sets that work very well for kid shows. |

I love the shell game but I mostly do kids shows. One day a kid saw my shells and asked about them and I was very surprised at how entertained they were about the shells.
I got a set of shells from Shellgame-Al - The 3 blind mice with the yellow cheese ball. Great shells. Work great for kids. Takes the gambling theme out of the shell game but keeps it lots of fun. |

It sounds like the same psychology as bending a corner during the 3CM. Was that your inspiration?

IMO,
The spectator should never suspect you can move the pea from one shell to another. They should only EVER think that your "pattern play" is sufficient to do the job. This is NOT a sleight-of-hand effect. This is why a pea should never be discovered in your pocket, for instance. Once a spectators thinks you can secretly move/steal a pea, what good is it to watch the trick. They should always think they can catch you if they could just follow closely enough. This is also why in a REAL Svengali deck routine, you should never show the "and now they're all the 7H" phase...like was selfishly done on TV with the TV Magic Cards (they wanted to sell decks). It tips the gaff. If you're using a different colored shell, how do you prevent tipping that a pea can be stolen/moved at will?

I am with Frank here. to many magicians see the shell game as a TRICK. it is not. it is a game. same with three card monte. never show 3 queens. people know then a queen can be everywhere you want. or show a pea is here and here and here.
colored shell or shotglass endings can be good when you sell it as a kind of explanation. yes I know that it gets a great reaction. same as card to wallet as ending in an ambitious card routine. the trick is good (that is the great reaction) but not Always in theme with the Original started effect. Now the phgill Cass routine with the two shells and two covers is different. he says he will talk him out of his choice. I Always end with the 3 finger finale p.s. I do a shell sequence where I turn one shell sideways to make it visible. moving the shells around I un-turn that shell and turn a different shell. |

If Frank is right, how can you justify the 3 finger, one handed remove? The shells never move in a pattern of confusion.
I also think that it depends what you're showing it with. If you are doing any close up magic, it is already assumed that you are a slight of hand artist. I think that there is a big difference between tipping the Svengali gaff and letting the spec. come to their own conclusion about how the trick is done. |

I have some new shell sets at 3shells.com that are coming out soon that has two different color shell sets, for a four shell game set. Also, two different color balls work with the shells.
This is a new type shell game that appears to be done very fair. It would be too long of a post to give all the details. If you want to know more about this new shell game the link below will give more details and pictures of a couple of the sets that will be available soon. http://4photos.weebly.com/

I'm not saying there are no exceptions to the rule but very very few and the exceptions should be used in a responsible way. I too LOVE the phil cass routine and he uses the sleight-of-hand phase at the very end where it makes the most sense. I'd keep giving my opinions but I'm selfishly going to stop and go back to what I was doing a few minutes ago...laughing at jakeg's signature. Very funny.

The problem with the 3 shell game are not to find alternative effects but
1) to write (or find) a friendly non challenging and entertaining script and be able to "act" it and "voice" it properly (not mono-tone) 2) to find a spectacular climax (a "large" load at the scale of a nutshell never looks like an impossibility) Pete Biro probably has found by far the best at this time and I know only of David Gemell having also found an acceptable climax (and I know a bit about the 3 shell game)

I'm not familiar with Pete Biro's routine.
I am quite fond of Bob Kohler's routine. I think it's perfect for a novice shell game worker which is an extra plus. The beginning is smart, the middle is fun and the ending is great.

I particularly like Kohler''s explanation routine. I introduce an extra pea and it blows everyone away.
