They are all great musicians. But.. there are far better versions of "Rolling & Tumbling" out there. I myself prefer the glass-finger ones.

Best live version I heard: Muddy Waters in..'73?...With Steady Rolling Bob Margolin on 2nd guitar, Pine-Top Perkins on piano & Jerry Portney ( I think ) on harp. Muddy fronting with his righteous vocals & his metal-fingered (not glass) guitar. It all worked and was absolutely thrilling.

Favourite guitarist; Duane Eddy. Not because of his talent or lack of with said guitar but his music that I grew up with and that twangy guitar. Showing my age.

Miles Davis, no slouch himself, once said that 'tone' was the most important thing in music... not speed, not complexity, etc. I was once in a jazz guitar class with Mimi Fox, analyzing a Wes Montgomery tune. We noted how clever he was to substitute a 'fifth' instead of a 'flat fifth' during one passage, how he slurred instead of bending a note, etc etc.. and Mimi stopped the class, and said "but no one said how beautiful it was!" We were speechless. yeah, Duane Eddy! Lynn |
