My father has purchased several bottles of scotch in the 1980's which now seem to be of value in the EU market.

Do these prices really exist or is it some internet bids being run up?

The Macallan 18 year old is about $225, new, but is the bottle from 1980 worth $1,500?

Does someone know a good way to get a fair value, or get into a auction?

The price of whisky is almost all tax.

For what it's worth, Scotch is not whiskey, as in the title of this thread.

Scotch is whisky.

It is still a big racket.

S2000magician is correct; whiskey is Irish, whisky is scotch.

As for price, when bottles become rare it is down to what someone will pay at an auction or in a specialist store. If there is a customer out there your bottle could be worth a lot. But the difficulty might be finding the customer. You would really need to find a dealer and accept that he will take a whack as commission.
