Yes, and if the two-syllable word with changing pronunciation is a noun, it almost always gets the stress on the first syllable.

I'm sure it's just a regional thing, like when people say "IN-sur-ance" instead of the more common "in-SUR-ance," or "ve-HIC-le" rather than "VE-icle" (the "h" is silent).
