So I always thought Automatic Writing was kind of nonsense.
Then, last night, I accidentally did it - and it was easily the weirdest and most inane thing I've ever read. If you're interested, you can read exactly what happened here: http://atlasmentalism.blogspot.co.uk/ I'm genuinely disturbed by this apparently uninterrupted flow of consciousness and don't know what to think. So I thought I'd air the subject here and see what the rest of you thought, or if you had any experiences to share. Best, Atlas |

I've done a lot of automatic writing over the years - however, as you were doing this on a keyboard, are you sure you mean automatic writing and not stream of (un)consciousness? because the text via the keyboard is very, very precise with very few errors...and typing all of that with your eyes shut and asleep would be interesting to witness...
i mean, I can touch type, and I can write in a stream of consciousness way - but I would not be able to do that with so much accuracy and via a keyboard...i think if I tried AW on a keyboard I would be hitting the same keys over and over... the surrealists would use it to generate ideas for poems and short stories...but they would use notepad and pen obviously, and then rework the a-w...

Just was typing away one moment working on this book and then woke up and this was in front of me, and I felt sort of like how you feel when you are riding in a car and tired and then wake up a few miles down the road when a bump jostles you, so I'd say yes - trance and automatic writing, but I'm not an expert on it. But I've been typing since I was 13 and run pretty well around 90 words per minute. I was also surprised at how few errors there were, but the stream of language is just bananas - you can tell the exact moment that I went from being there to not - and the typos increased the further I went, almost like as I slipped deeper into sleep, my accuracy plummeted. I have read it again and again this morning and laughed at it, but it is still pretty strange. Best, Atlas |

If you try automatic drawing with a japanese brush marker, you can get some very interesting things out of it...
you should put your text through a cut-up generator too, see how far you go with it!

There are some fascinating and quite coherent examples of automatic writing and drawing. It seems it is a faculty of the subconscious mind at least in part. While there is a debate as to the true source of the information, and it is likely that various sources are in play, it is doubtless that there is something in the unconscious expression. It is difficult to ignore the similarity of these texts compared to dream states, also thought to be expressions of the subconscious or unconscious mind in an altered state. The fact that you were consciously unaware of the writing process strongly supports this notion.

This is interesting - I've always been doubtful of the possibility of automatic typing, since typing requires such specific motor control. The production of language thereby (even word salad) is an operation of discrete events much less forgiving of errors, which tend to compound.
Since your conscious self was absent, your accuracy suggests a kind of split state in which you managed with ease to record something of those bizarre narrations that appear at the edge of sleep, and that leap out of sight on the occasions they go too far too soon into nonsense and jar the critical faculty back to wakefulness. Two words come to mind: "somnambulent" (with regards to your apparent dexterity), and "hypnagogia", referring to the interstitial state of consciousness between waking and sleeping. There are several kinds of my own experience that seem related to yours. One occurred during a meditation retreat. The practice was physically and mentally difficult. I know people say that when you try to meditate your conscious mind goes into overdrive and this is true. More interestingly, by the sixth or seventh day I was experiencing protracted flashes of sheer creativity from what I guess was the subconscious mind. E.g. I have some capacity to write music in normal awareness - but in these moments I became aware of sporadic flows of melody and harmonic relationships that I was not in control of. I observed something produce itself, not knowing where it would go next, and which verged on hallucination. If I had been allowed pen/paper and to stop the practice, the puzzle would be how to maintain this experience while attempting to record it. Your reference to the patients of an asylum in the blog is worth some thought. One might consider that the mind itself effectively is always dreaming, awake or not. Perhaps some minds are caught up in levels or gradients that are generally repressed to the subconscious amongst those who, while awake, enjoy the broader consensus reality. |

Looch and Kennedy make appearances in the last paragraph. I found it interesting that they stepped into your stream. Of consciousness, that is.

It's a fascinating prospect, isn't it? I've often wondered about this. Each time I have tried to induce it, I've been aware of a relaxing of my mind, but still being in complete control of what I'm writing. I've tried it with pen in hand -- which isn't a very good idea because I can barely read my own handwriting in the "real" world.
Then I read that people who are accustomed to writing on keyboards should have no problem transferring their automatic writing there. So I tried it on my computer and...nada. But I will say in all honesty that I am intrigued by the whole prospect. Thank you for sharing this. David

This is very cool. You should talk about this in an upcoming episode for the podcast. Especially because you guys already started to talk about your beliefs in what hypnosis can and cannot do.
