Hey guys!
I was hoping you might be able to point me in the direction of a SIMILAR (not the exact) effect to one that was performed on Penn and Teller Fool Us by Mike Hammer. The effect was that he had someone color an outline of a woman and then he revealed a prediction to match. I DO NOT WANT TO DO THE SAME THING! I merely have an application for the premise of that type of a prediction and would like to be steered toward marketed effects that are similar. I have no interest in pursuing Mr. Hammer's methods or presentation. Thank you! |

From how I think that was done (I'm not 100%), I imagine that it's going to be hard for anyone to reply to this without it getting moved to Inner Thoughts. Only 4 more posts to go, though, you're really close. Don't forget the little people when you're on the other side.

I appreciate that, but like I said I'm not looking for "how it was done" proprietary to him. I just want to know what's on the market that's is similar.

No, I understand that, but in my opinion recommending similar products would sort of give away how he did it. Pm me and I can tell you why.

The exact effect is on the market, however it should not be discussed up here.
Best wishes, Harry

Seethings,
I don't believe that would be the point when the penny drops for laymen. It was a colorful, comedy act that was performed on a show that, in nature of it's own premise, recognizes that the performance IS a trick and that it has a logical explanation. Penn and Teller even knew how it was done which indicates that it was not real mind reading. And also, if an effect is marketed and sold, the people who buy it have a right to do what they want with it. That's what Mike Hammer did, and that's newbstermagi wants to do. Neither of them invented it, but they both want to put their own spin on it. There's no harm in that. |

What's funny is that when you google the name of this post plus an important word, the effect actually shows up on the first page of results. If any magician releases content to the public, they are agreeing for the secret to be given away to anyone with the money, even non-magicians. If you want to keep your secrets truly a secret then don't sell them to the public, it's that simple. I have limited release books and DVD's some of which I paid well over $1,000 for and that stuff I won't be giving out to any newbies because it's obvious that it's meant to be kept to professional magicians and mentalists. However, if I can buy your secrets on Amazon, you can't be apprehensive about laymen getting their hands on them.
Everybody is so eager to buy effects that are easy and self-working but it's the skill and showmanship that only comes with practice and experience which separates the pros from the newbies. If you focused more on what you're bringing to the table outside of the effect then you wouldn't be so insecure about other people knowing how you did it. When a true mentalist performs, no one even tries to figure out how they did it because it's an experience, not a trick. |

Browneyed,
I agree with pretty much everything you said, but I don't really understand how that argument is relevant to anything else in this thread. But good advice anyway. |

Sorry, that started as a response to Seethings quoting Weatherford but it turned into a rant and I forgot to reign it in. The point was that secrets get out because magicians want to make money off of them. Yes, when a bunch of people perform the same trick it loses its authenticity as mentalism but that's the cost of making a quick buck from marketing your effects. If you want to keep your stuff genuine, don't release it. Do I make sense now?

Totally. And I 100% agree with you.
