I saw Harry Allen at a lecture do a calculator prediction. The calculator was not gimmicked in any way, but somehow the calculator was set up so that no matter what was added together a set total came out at the end and matched his prediction.
I can't remember his explanation. Does anyone use this effect? Again the calculator is not gimmicked, but I think it uses the memory button. Can someone help me on this or tell me a book to look into on this? Please reply or PM me. Thanks. Steve

It's possible to find this effect in Richard Osterlind's 'Dynamic Mentalism,' out of print, but check with Steven's Magic. But please take a look at Richard's website as well.
Good luck, hmk |

There is a simple formula you can enter before the spec touches the calculator which will allow you to predict the total - and then hand it out for examination

I bought this calculator from Harry Allen about a year ago. The above post explains it.
If presented correctly it is a very good piece of business! Ray |

Hi,
You can do this effect with any scientific calculator. I perform it "impromptu" as I set it up right in front of the spectator's eye while pattering about the calculator. This freaks people. -Oz |

Hi Oz,
I know which method you're talking about, but does anyone ever mention the tell-tale symbol that appears above the numbers? Or, do you know a brand of calculator that doesn't show the symbol? PM me if you don't want to talk about it here. |

The only "trick" I remember along these lines was where you ask the user to name his favourite number between 1 and 9, say 7.
You retrieve 12345679 from memory, and ask him to multiply the displayed number by 63 ( = 9 x the number he thought of) and the answer is ... |

Otherwise, the following sounds pretty close to what you are looking for:

You can probably program a normal graphing calculator to give the result as your force number. Of course, you bring out one of those calculators and lots of people will instantly jump to this conclusion.

Thanks Jack, I'll try that tomorrow and report how it worked out.
Ivan7, graphing calculators are too confusing for laymen. My contribution: if anyone cares, the Texas Instruments BA II financial calculator does not show the telltale symbol I mentioned earler. However, as with the issue of graphing calculators, I've realized that most people find graphing, financial and other specialized calculators too confusing to use. Additionally, I've had people attribute the effect to some secret function on the calculator (since they don't know what all the buttons are for). Scientific calculators, however, are well received (in my experience). I believe this is because they're accepted everywhere: schools, work, and the SAT's. |

Is that with a calculator that has () (brackets)?? I heard of a similar idea, but havent found a non-threatening calculator for laymen without brackets. Tom |

Hi,
I've been using this calculator for a few years but I'm having a "new" problem. What if I want to place the effect by the end of the show and I don't want to do the set up on stage. The standby of my calculator only holds for 10 minutes. After that I have to set it up again. Any help? Please PM if necessary. Thanks. Best |

Do the "work" under the pretense of checking out the calculator to be sure it's still functioning properly.

This effect (formula) works great with the iphone calculator. There are no tell tale signs either. You need to turn the iphone sideways for the scientific calculator

Or, you can always rely on the old standby -- and abacus with gimmicked balls.
