Many Years ago Bud West of Abbotts manufactured 4 Joker breafcase tables. Does anyone have any idea of the value of the table today?

I think back in the 1960's they sold for like $120, always out of my price range. I guess that would be like $1,200 now. Don't look like you ever used them.
Let's face it, tables is the very last thing any of the magicians would consider purchasing. Many never do and use chairs and any table handy at the place they are going to do some magic. Magician's are cheap when it come to accessories, and so called collector's are extremely cheap, only wanting a "deal", more like scroungers. I am afraid you will have a real problem trying to sell them for what they are actually worth, if that is what your inquiry is for. Also, magic has changed to a close-up market, stand up magicians are a rarity. They were advertised in The New Tops Magazine, it is available on CD now from Abbott's. You could look up the actual price back then and go from their. Sorry, being they are not like a Legs Table, that transition, and the joker was a bad choice, in my opinion, then they have little action for the buyer to put into his act. Bud West was a great guy, he was always helpful, and an extremely fantastic craftsman for Abbott's. His production work speaks for itself. But only those that dealt with Abbott is familiar with his name. I never heard of any Abbott's collectors, even Abbott's does not bother to keep a prototype or sample of any of their products. I don't know how true it is, but I heard that Mike "Gordon" Miller was the only person that worked at Abbott's that had a huge collection of Abbott's props. But he never to my knowledge let Abbott's copy any of the props. The only time old Abbott's products were introduced was when someone turned in estate magic, and they found it was an old Abbott's prop. Then they made a few to market. Even then, they would sell all, and they never made any more. Strange way to run a manufacturing company, I think. |

HI Bill!
The late Jack Bridwell (Indiana) had a TREMENDOUS collection of "Abbottiana". I remember selling him one of my first props (Abbott's "Unbelievable Production Box". It had been a gift from an old carny side show owner when I was a teenager. I still have a wartime Abbott breakaway fan (with brass ribs!!!) and a chrome plated Foo can (pre war). I showed it to Greg a few years ago, and he said, "'We never made anything that good!" Bud West was definitely a master craftsman, and a great guy!

We have an olde SUCKERETTE dove vanish from Abbott's. That helpful Miller fellow dated it for us as being from the "wartime" era. He reached this conclusion because the box sides are held together with laces as opposed to metal hinges because the country's metal was being diverted to the War Effort.
We have a few of Bud West made pieces, too. I agree each is made very well. In more recent times (still several years ago) Greg said Bud West's son was occasionally making some items for Abbott's, but I don't know any details. Julie |
