Make America Great Again! - Trump in 2020 ... "We're a capitalistic society. I go into business, I don't make it, I go bankrupt. They're not going to bail me out. I've been on welfare and food stamps. Did anyone help me? No." - Craig T. Nelson, actor.

Ignorance of the basics of American Government has been a standard for decades.
I remember back in the late 60's they questioned people with the Declaration of Independence as if it were a petition and asked people to sign it. Nobody would. Some people actually accused the questioners of being "unAmerican" because they wanted to overthrow the government.

So, you think kids are taught the same way today as they were back in the first eighty years of the twentieth century? You do know that political correctness was born in the mid eighties out of the colleges and universities and that's when America's education system started going belly-up, right?
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

Is there some merit to knowing which amendment covers which right(s), as opposed merely to knowing the rights in toto?

Sorry Balducci, I sincerely apologize for misunderstanding your comment. Typically when someone posts a link, I spend very little time on it. If I read all the links posted in here to the max, I'd never get anything done. I scanned the article and couldn't find much to respond to so I responded as I did. Glad you agree with it too! Cheers back at ya.

Except that the article is exclusively referring to Reagan's actions as Governor of CA. Somehow, I don't think that was in the 80's.

At least 8 of the paragraphs in the second half deal with his time as President. If nothing else, the words "as President" and the discussion of his 1983 blue ribbon commission's "A Nation at Risk" document should have clued you in. Really, I wonder why I even bother trying to have informed respectful discussions here when I see a response like yours. Having said that, my sincere apologies if your browser simply failed to load the second half of the document, or if you have some eye condition that prevented you from reading what was in front of your face.

In America you are free to be stupid. In fact, I remember a time when no one thought much about what Washington does because it had so little effect on our lives. That's changed I think. If you ever spent time with someone that lived in a communist country all their life, you find they were always talking about the government because it affected their lives so much and determined their well being. When you go to emerging countries, you see people less concerned with government because it provides nothing and they are on their own. It's never about right and left, it's more about how much government. We are in an interesting place in history.
