I have purchased some authorized versions of Billy McComb's half dyed hank routine. The routines come with dye tubes that don't have the tape inside. They are also, in my hands at least, too small to fit the silks comfortably without the risk of the silk coming out the other side of the tube. In McComb's "25 years Wiser" he describes the routine and it uses dye tubes that are bigger than the ones that come with the versions I have bought and he uses dye tubes with tape in them.
I have been unable to get the routine to a level where I am happy with it with the dye tubes I have. So, I am looking for some help. 1. What dye tubes did Billy McComb actually use? Did he change the type of tube he used? 2. What are my options for dye tubes? I can't believe how difficult these are to come by.I am aware of the palmo as one option. Any recommendations for dye tubes? BTW, I also have Levent's routine. I am not totally sold on Levent's gimmick and routine. Thanks in advance.

The only authorized version was granted to Abbott's Magic. If you have theirs, then it should be like the ones in the book, but only not made out of Ronson refill butane canisters. Of course, be careful, and expel all the fuel, wash out, then cut to size with a simple sharp razor knife.
His gimmick is not that hard to make, and if you have the old book, it describes how they are made. To be heavier, then you can simply use copper plumbing, cut to length, and squashed in a vise. Then cut the slits for the ribbon tape which is sold at all fabric stores. Then secure the ribbon on the outside and either cover with wrap body bandages or paint or whatever you desire. |

I will echo a lot of what Bill said. I believe that Viking Magic may have also been granted permission to make the tubes and routine.
I made a set from brass tubing. I need to find them to give you the exact sizes. But I ended up just a little smaller than Billy's gimmick. They work fine with 15" 6 momme silks. Levent's routine is good but the problem I have is it uses only 5mm silk. These silks were out far too fast. The Palmo is not a suitable substitue for the actual dye tubes. They are too big. So many guys have tried to "improve" Billy's work by using only one gimmick. I really don't see any advantage. Certainly the public does not know any. I am off to Abbott's but I will try to find those gimmicks when I get back and drop you a pm. Richard

I received Pop's dye tube today (prompt shipping from California) and I love it! It's beautifully machined and the size is fantastic--it is brilliant. I know--it's just a dye tube, but what a fantastic size. The only thing missing is Pop's autograph on the gimmick. My compliments also to Jim Riser for his craftsmanship. If you haven't ordered yours yet, I'd get on that immediately, if not sooner. This tube will accommodate a 24" silk hank.

Ya know, Jake, that occurred to me too. Can ya use smaller silks? I imagine you could fit quite a few 9 inch or 6 inch silks. I personally used 18 inch. Lately, I work out of my pockets, so I carry the Simplex or the Tenyo plastic jobby-doo.
Don't let the size of the thing deter you. I have small hands and the Palmo and 18 inch silks are NO problem. Your angles are gonna be crucial. Timing, and precise movement. I gotta get one. Maybe order some 24s from Ruth Rice. Doug |

Jake, I have used the Palmo for 18" change with no problems. Pop's tube is made for up to 24" but you could use 18" if you wanted. I have tried it and it works fine, but keep in mind the size of the tube takes a little more managing for angles so if you use 18", I'd stick with the Palmo. I am going to try Pop's tube for half-dyed because I suspect it might work better with two 15" silks loaded than the Palmo. At some point, I think this becomes personal preference as what each person might like. Doug's idea of using the large tube for multiples is certainly a great possibility.
