Saw this yesterday, Upstate NY

What do you think caused the scratch marks?

And the same tree a little further up:

I dunno. Maybe either the Mexicans or the ISIS members Slim has warned us about are slashing trees out of spite?

My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums.

The tree is dying.

As Slim King says the bark is falling of.

Sometimes the Café reminds me of Bill and Ted sitting outside of the Circle K asking passers by for answers for their History homework.

At least ask this on an arborist chat room as well as this one.

I posted in an arborist chat room, in their NOT VERY ARBORIST, STILL section, but they only wanted to talk magic, so I figured I'd ask here.

Seriously, I asked because 1) I thought it was interesting and 2) we have some very knowledgeable naturalists in this part of the Café. Smile

I know the tree is dead or dying--what I was wondering was if they were animal scratch marks.

For example:

http://www.bear-tracker.com/blackbearscentmarkingttrees.html

Now, they look too low down and thin for a bear (though there are black bears in this area), but I was wondering maybe raccoon or porcupine.

But if y'all don't think so, I'm glad to get your opinions.

Looks like bark splitting due to winter freeze. Perhaps some water was trapped under the outer layer of bark.

If they'd been in Canada I think we'd all agree that it was Wolverine.

Not so sure about upstate New York.

I remember a story as a kid about a bear cub that stood on a snow drift to mark a tree like the "big bears did." Later on in the summer the scratches were far above the ground
and the other bears respected his territory and mighty presence. I think this story was about "don't make assumptions" -- not sure.

Some trees do shed the bark. I have a Maple tree in my front yard that sheds some bark every year.
I used to think it was dying and almost had it cut down one time, but I found out that was normal.

Porcupines eat the outer bark, leaving tooth marks on the exposed inner trunk.
