Hi all,
I've recently returned to magic after a long hiatus. In the intervening years, I've grown into a rather large adult. That is, overweight (which I'm working on) but also just physically big, like offensive lineman big. When I practice in front of the mirror, I find the juxtaposition of normal sized magic props (cards and coins) to my very large hands and body to be aesthetically displeasing, and I'm wondering if it doesn't have a lot to do with how I'm handling them. (When I hold a deck in dealers grip, for instance, my hand seems to engulf and swallow the cards.) I'm wondering if there are any famous magicians of size I might turn to for inspiration in grace and handling of props to minimize the disparity. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

I suggest that you don't worry about how you look. I have several big and large guys that have done pretty well doing magic. None of us look the way we did when we were young. It is just a fact of life.
Learn to entertain and engage the audience and they will love you. Work with your facial expressions and patter. Enjoy what you do and love your audience it will come through. Not knowing exactly what type of magic you are doing. It is hard to really directly advise. Since you are in the Cincinnati area, you might go over to Covington and talk with Artie Kidwell. He might be able to advise you a little more. Richard

Artie Kidwell. (Mike Caldwell died several years ago. He weighed about 300 lbs. He was a terrific entertainer!)
Matt Schulien was another big magician. You wouldn't want to follow his "ACT"! Tiny Grant, ditto,

Jim had really large hands and his close-up with cards, rings etc. was extraordinary. Julie |

Earnie Bryant, Larry Jennings, and Jason England were and are big guys. They each handled cards beautifully.

Bautier DeKolta David Hoy Kalanag I am a SW Ohio resident, myself. While he was not particularly famous, my past stage-manager-turned full-time pro magician was a large man. His name was Shawn D. Hicks; he performed as "Shawn Dion." Tragically, he passed away in 2012.

Well, I'd say, "USE IT!" Not only can you get humor out of the size issue, but out of what you're doing about it. And don't forget, society in general is clinically obese these days (here in the States, anyway). You're talking to YOUR people. It may not be the ideal way to bring folks together, but if it works, roll with it.
