A malini egg bag has the gimmick in the bottom corner of the bag. The tarbel bag (if I'm not mistaken) has the gimmick half way down the bag, not at the very bottom, like the malini egg bag.

In the 70s when I was living on the street in western Massachusetts I made a small egg bag from some heavy velvet and put the gimmick on the bottom but let it go half way across. I would take real eggs and clean them out and replace the innards with silver and gold glitter from the craft store. At the end of the routine I'd crush the egg in my hand and grind it to bits and it would fall to the ground with the shower of glitter.
It was a killer ending and folks liked it. I suppose today that there is some kind of ordinance against crushing eggs filled with glitter on the street but it was a fun ending. Use it if you want. Make a little funnel out of paper and then putty over the hole in the egg when you're done. I suppose some five minute epoxy would do nicely with a touch of paint. -=tabman

Thanks Mario,
I spent a month busking all over the UK back in 1983. It was December. Talk about cold and wet, a lot like it is here in Tennessee right now. I had a great time. London to Edinburgh to Templepatrick even south to Dublin. Best was the good times in the pubs. What a great bunch of folks you guys in the UK are. Never met a stranger once I got out of London proper. All the best for a good holiday season!!! -=tabman

No, from what I understand, you're supposed to hold the "chicken" by its neck. So the head wouldn't be designed to stand on its own. Quote:
So, as Bill Palmer noted in his above post, I have learned that getting the right sized egg is important. Even with the Tarbell bag. (This is, I've been told, is even more important with the Mallini bag because it's made of silk-like fabric, which shows every little bulge.) Per routines, so far, I am still leaning toward the Tarbell routine. It involves two kids and I feel it has potential to have fun with. Maybe I have a Tarbell bag. How would I tell? Is the "Tarbell" routine is the "course?" If so, where? (I'm considering getting the CD-Rom of the course from that mailing company, Lybrary. Mandrake01,
The Tarbell rountine is in the Lybrary electronic version of the 'Course', as well as being in the printed volumes of the Tarbell Books. I recommend you checking out the Tarbell version for it's comedy potential, and I would also suggest the "Ken Brooke & Friends & The Malini Egg Bag" available from Magic, Inc. among other places. The handling of the Malini egg bag is a real close up fooler. The routine makes it seem like real magic. I recently purchased a copy of "Classic Secrets of Magic" by Bruce Elliot. Inside this great book of magic is a Roy Benson egg production climax for an egg bag routine. (I am working on that now). I recommend this book as well. Good luck with your egg bag. There is a reason this is a classic. -- Robert

Thanks! When, if and if ever I get money to spend on magic again. One of the first things I plan to do is order the Tarbell course from the Lybrary.

The Egg Bag is one of my features in strolling and stand-up work.
I use Tarbell Bags made by Pauline Tong (available from http://www.dazzlingmagic.com). I bought several once I saw the quality of these and wanted to have spare bags. I use a practice golf ball instead of an egg. I use the Martin Lewis routine because I love the look of shock on the face of the spectator, when they perform the finale of the routine. |

Always gets a good response when I turn the bag inside out that one last time, look at it, then turn the bag around to show the zipper. Sets the tone nicely for the character I portray out there (then too, so does the embarassed eye roll when I open the zip).
