Sorry if this topic has been discussed, the forum's search engine isn't working... again.
I don't know exactly how the dancing cane works and I am not asking for the secret. But since the commercial canes availlable wouldn't fit my character, is there some other way than buying the dancing cane to learn about this prop/gimmick? And is a homemade dancing cane possible to make? I'd like to be able to float a homemade scepter that would fit my character... Richard

Tannen's sells the manuscript of Lewis Ganson Dancing Cane. It is for people who already own a cane. It will tell you how to make it dance.
There are no plans available, sorry but you still have a lot of experimenting if you wish to make your own. |

To answer the second part of your question -- yes, it's very possible to make a "homemade" dancing cane, or staff, or whatever. I've done it. However, what I did first was to buy the commercial effect to get the feeling of how it works, and then went from there once I was comfortable with it.

Thanks a lot guys. I guess I'll buy the Mentzer book and see if I need to buy the trick before I try to make one of my own.

Keep in mind, if you're making a cane (or other round type device, you'd need to invest in a Lathe.

Ricker,
What if I try to make a scepter? I was thinking of buying or making the head of the staff (from light material) and keep the staff the same diameter the whole length... Or is it because the principle used in the dancing cane requires a lathe? Richard

Even with a scepter, the other end from the head still needed to be pointed to keep control of the cane for some moves.
Once you get the manuscript, I think you'll understand why. The good news is, I think you could buy the gimmick that's used with the plastic cane and it would work fine with a scepter. It has the missing pieces you need. |

I own a homemade dancing cane. It was made by a friend of mine in school (decades ago) whittled from balsa wood and balanced for the dancing effect. I still use it after all these years. It doesn't use the gimmick as the store bought ones use, its balance point was located and that certain something was attached right through the cane. Good Luck with your sceptre.

I did the same as Martin, above.
The cost is low so you'll be able to experiment. Use a needle to find the "balance point". Finish with a coat of primer then two coats of good enamel from a model store. Carry in a capped plastic tube to prevent breakage. Riley |

Rcad,
My wife (Lucy) is a dancer as well as a stage magician who has and uses several dancing canes. There is no benefit to the taper unless a tip won't fit the end otherwise. You do not want the balance to be in the exact center. Use weights if you have to to make the top heavier than the bottom. Placement and thread length are critical. Make it fit your arms, not someone else's. Factory models are all the same length. Most of all check out Jeff McBride's tape on the subject. It will give you everything you have to know including the special type thread used (German). It is money very well spent. Good Luck! Bob |
