Have you noticed that a lof of people who used to post here on the Magic Café no longer visit here?
I'm not necessarily saying that's a bad thing either because some of them I felt had other agendas, like constantly pushing their products or telling everyone how great they were. Still, I guess I miss 1-2 individuals more than others. I used to enjoy Danny Hustle and James Munton posting here. Your thoughts? Gerry |

I miss some people. Others I can live without quite easily!
But just to fill in what is missing, how about this? I am the greatest ever, and I am sure I have some junk lying around I can sell. There - self promotion and product pushing in one post. That makes up for some of the missing guys.

Yeah, I know what you mean Gerry. A lot of people have switched to facebook because you can check multiple group posts and your personal stuff in one place. But this format is actually better for us. Munton has his own Facebook group you can join. And Jolly Roger has 2, one to chat about anything (but limited to 52 people) and one called Kids Korner to buy and sell kidshow stuff that has 1300 members. And DynaMike has one also, but not very active at this point. I bounce around between them too much cause I'm ADD and avoid doing stuff.

Like Dan said, Facebook is quickly gaining ground as an alternate place to have magic discussions, in the private groups there. I've seen some discussion threads bloom to 200+ posts in less than 24 hours.
In addition to Jolly Roger's group ("Jolly Jammers") and James Munton's group ("Magic Bistro"), some other Facebook groups that I like are "KIDabra International Members and Friends on Facebook", "Fans and Friends of Barry Mitchell Products", "SME Talk Magic", "Marketing for Entertainers" (started by Chad Wonder), and "Magician Business" (started by Ken Kelly and Julian Mather). There's also a Facebook group for "Kids Entertainer HUB" (again, started by Ken Kelly and Julian Mather), but I don't know much about that group yet. I think you need to opt into their website, before you can join the private Facebook group. I visit Facebook and the Magic Café on a daily basis. - Donald

I liked Al as well. I didn't always agree with his politcal views, but I still respected him.
That said, I still think it's somewhat ironic how some who have moved on made their names here, pitched their products to the max here, and baically learned a ton about magic and marketing here. Oh well. Gerry |

If you think about it, this could be pretty good. It's just like being in the classroom when the teacher left for a few minutes.
We have this whole place just to ourselves. Gerry |

I have been added to some facebook magic forums, and each one is a waste of time. Some of the people whom I regard as nothing but trolls here are very active on facebook, so I am not interested in being involved there.

Mary, I talked to Al, and he wanted me to let you know(he saw this thread) that he misses you, as well.

This forum is over 12 years old. Technology has changed and Facebook often gets a quicker response then a thread on a forum. There is also an issue of stored information. Whatever we write on here, remains visible forever. Craig Petty and the Red problem only got serious when someone looked up a very old forum post he made which contradicted what he was saying.
Anyone active on the forums who voices an opinion, has to deal with troublemakers who go through years and years of all our old posts to find ammunition to argue with. I personally got fed up when I tried to help someone by answering their question, and someone found a post I made six years ago and tried to say I was contradicting myself. The world was different six years ago and answers evolve. But someone actively went looking for something to attack me with. It was behaviour like that which stopped me even trying to help people. It wasn't worth the backlash. Then there were a lot of trolls going to personal websites and mocking photos of people as attacks. Behaviour like that just stopped the regulars from posting. We even had a few personal attacks and threats outside of the forum. Yes, some of those issues still exist on FB, but to a lesser degree as we can delete the thread if it gets out of hand. We don't have that control on this forum and so our reputation can be ruined by saying something that someone else sees an entertainment to attack on. I also found people would twist my words to steer a conversation is evil directions when it was most obviously not the way it was intended. That leads to hidden profiles. Most often, the worst trouble makers were those without a website or online profile. This gave them anonymity to insult others with no recourse for their actions and so discussions just became stressful and not fun. Facebook only allows people into the discussion where their identity is known. It doesn't stop the insults, but it does make people think about what they post before posting it. The need for social online interaction with our peers is still a desire we all have. But sadly the acts of a few nasty people have made it an unpleasant experience to join discussions as often as we once did. |

A lot of them got banned. Although we never know the reasons, it seems that it is quite arbitrary. As a result, I suspect that those who were vocal and had strong opinions (those that were interesting) were either banned or stopped posting for fear of similar fates.
Others, like Munton and , go to other sites. I'm with you, Mary; I was once on Facebook but I fired them and never went back, so I have effectively barred myself from those groups. I only drop in every week or two. When I do, not much of value has been posted. I generally find that the "Private Messages" are not private or personal at all, but rather shotgun advertising; the same threads are still active with a whole bunch of "Attaboys" and "I agree" but little fresh content of value; and internal bickering is ongoing. There are several here who -- 2 or 3 specific people come to mind -- who only post as a way to slip in plugs for their products. I have grown weary of this and as a result I drastically cut back my activity level. I can't speak for others, but I suspect some of this is the reason they are no longer here, as well. I don't want to paint a bleak picture, however. I travel the US and Canada extensively. One of the best benefits I have from being here is that I have personally met many of you (Dynamike, Howie, Munton, Magnus, and many others). Deep down, though, I think that The Café has probably peaked. |

Great topic Gerry! I miss many who have gone, even in the 4+ years I have been here. While ku7uk3 shares views on Facebook vs TMC, I see most of the features here as superior to Facebook for the purposes I choose to come here. The search engine, older threads, anonymous personas, all add an element I have found very beneficial. The most recent posts bringing the thread to the top allow conversations to flow. Facebook works for promotion or staying in touch on a certain level, but seems inferior to a true blog site like TMC for more meaningful dialogue.
For those who find value joining Facebook groups, please share a bit more specifics. I glanced at a few, but did jot see much going on. |

Hey Charlie,
I hope things are going well for you a Med School. I think it's just great that you're taking that big step. As I mentioned once before, just because you become a doctor doesn't mean you can't be a magician too. While I think many are now turning to Facebook, I'm certain many of our former regulars are keeping tabs of this place even if they're not posting here like they used to. Gerry |
