This one is based in L.A at the very early stages of everything, so its basically a whole new viewpoint. So you haven't missed anything yet After watching the first episode I like it..it has a very Hitchcock like feel |

It hasn't aired yet here on the west coast. But I've got AMC on so I don't miss it.

I liked it! Enough to keep watching. Without giving too much away to those who missed it, I like the character they are focusing on in this first episode. The main vantage point they chose creates doubt and insecurity for the surrounding players, and is a fresh way at looking how witnessing such a cataclysmic event could be recalled and retold.
My one criticism is that I wish they dug a bit deeper into the backstory on how the "virus" was created and spread. Or, maybe this will be yet another series on down the road.

I have mixed feelings about it. It was okay, but I really started to lose interest in getting to know a whole new set of characters in the same universe as The Walking Dead, particularly because they're just not as interesting. I could be wrong, of course, but I don't think this will last.

AMC picked up this new series with a two-year commitment. Six episodes in season one. Fifteen in season two.
(The Walking Dead also had only six episodes in its first season.)

Remember their show "The Rubicon" a few years back? Started out very promising and then totally flopped. I wonder if their are any contingencies that must be met for the second half of the season to be filmed. (It would seem so, otherwise why would they only commit to six episodes up front?)

They did NOT only commit to six episodes up front. They committed from the beginning to two seasons with a total of 21 episodes. A huge vote of confidence.
As noted, they did six episodes in the first season of The Walking Dead. So I wouldn't read any sort of weakness into the short first season. Maybe that is just how Kirkman and the other producers etc. like to work. Maybe (and I think this is likely) they simply did not want the first season of FTWD to overlap the next season of TWD, which I believe starts up this fall as soon as FTWD ends.

I was only wondering. Why so defensive? It's just a TV show.
But Variety gave it a less than stellar review, pretty much having the same problems with it that I did. |

I wasn't defensive, I capitalized NOT because from what you wrote before it seemed you missed my point that 21 episodes were bought from the start and not just six.
If anything, I was just irritated at having to repeat myself to you. As far as reviews of the show go, excluding Variety's (which I have not seen but I will take your word for) pretty much every other review I've seen thought it was terrific. What do I think of it? As far as I am concerned, watching TWD or FTWD is for the most part like watching paint dry. 99% of the time, nothing happens. The comic book itself is marginally better than that. But only marginally. Yeah, I'll still watch the shows. But it won't be appointment viewing. It will be something to record and watch later when I can fast forward through the commercials and slow bits.

It's like watching paint dry but you'll watch the shows just the same? Wow. I would never waste my time on something I had such a low opinion of.
Personally, I loved the first episode and am really looking forward to the rest of the season. It's 'next' season that I'm worried about. By then, it's just The Walking Dead again in a different location. It smashed all records for a Cable Premier with 10.1 million viewers. |

As I said, I speed through the slow parts. Then it's not so bad. The premise and main story are not bad, just too much filler.

I watched it but was not taken in. I never got into the original, either, however. This just seems more of the same. I enjoy science fiction, but I just don't see the appeal of people running from/killing zombies. after watching one or two shows, it's all the same. Thousands apparently disagree with me since the original is highly popular.

The reason it's hugely popular is because it's NOT all the same. It's about so much more. It's about what would happen to people if society were to completely break down. What would people do to survive? Could people retain their basic humanity? Can people still be good people in this type of society? What types of groups would exist? A group that survives through cannibalism? A group that survives through autocratic control by a single individual? A group that roams the country and preys on the weak? Can a family survive as a family. What does it take to trust someone in this type of world that you just meet? All of these ideas are explored within the series. Of course, for some people, those are the parts that they just fast forward through!

Different strokes. I find it to be a big old snooze. You look for social commentary, I wanna sit back and be entertained for 60 minutes.

I understand different strokes so please don't think I'm trying to convert you. Social commentary is nothing without great stories. I was just pointing out that it's more than just people killing zombies. I am 'entertained' by TWD more than nearly any other show on TV.
There are lots of 'popular' shows that I would never watch. Two and a Half Men comes to mind. Then there are great shows that I didn't 'get' at first watching but I found if I stuck with them, I came to love them, like Sienfeld. TWD was 'ok' the first couple seasons. My feeling is that every season has been better than the last. But like you said, 'Different Strokes'. My daughter loves the show as much as I do while my oldest son can't stomach the gore. He loved Dexter and I couldn't stomach the torture. |

In my case, I am not offended by it. I am simply not entertained (although one of the episodes I watched had people leaning over a trough and they're heads were being slammed with an axe or sledgehammer, and I found that a bit disturbing). I simply find the show to be boring and not entertaining. But like I said, I realize that there are a lot of people out there who do not share my opinion, and I'm okay with that.
I did give the new show a fair shake, and I watched the entire episode. Zzzzzz .... maybe it's just the concept of zombies that I don't like, since I can't think of a "zombie" show or movie that I ever enjoyed |

No one is wrong here really. Walking Dead is not about zombies. That's out there. But it MUST be about entertainment. That's also out there. And that's not a judgement call, it's just business.
So, Walking Dead is a success (S). That's out there. And in this case, S = Zombie/sci-fi/horror/drama-lovers tuning into what they think will be a cool zombie series and realizing it is much more and loving it much more, telling friends, spreading the word ala social media blah, blah, blah = S. The question is then, will the same formula hold up for a prequel? But of course the formula is far more complicated. Now we have the above revised formula which we'll say is X, + doubt (D). And will X + D = S. Hmmmm. The scholars (aka "the people") will decide*. *These formulas were created by a non-mathematician, non-statistician, non-scholar on any level, who was just trying to have some fun. Carry on.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.
