Who invented David Copperfield's version of this effect? I've heard it claimed as Steinmeyer's and Andre Kole's equally. Does anyone know the TRUE answer?

I believe a few people helped David work it out. When I spoke with Andre Kole last year, he said that he helped in its creation. Steinmeyer also helped. So I suppose it was the work of a few inventors.

Jim Steinmeyer came up with the premise of vanishing the statue and also the principle used to achieve it. I'm sure Andre would have come up with some extra "bits of business" to help nail the effect, but there's no doubt that Jim originated it.

Jim Steinmeyer is credited with creating it. He originally brought it to Doug Henning because he was working for Doug at the time. Doug didn't want to do it, so he presented it to Copperfield.
When I started working for Copperfield, it was a month after the Lear Jet TV special and David didn't think he was going to try to do anything bigger. It looked like he was heading that direction because the previous year he levitated and vanished a Ferrari. He liked the Statue Vanish because there was an underlying premise of "what would happen if our liberty was taken away". He also thought it would be a better "legend" than actual illusion - which he was right about. |

Hi Mr. Steve,
I have read many of your posts. May I ask if you are an Illusion designer? I am curious to know about your work with DC. Hope you don't mind. |

I too, Mr. Pellegrino, am quite curious about your work with Mr. Copperfield.
What you have seen this evening was real, though it may have nothing to do with reality.

As much as people claim fame to ideas, for those "in-the-know".... The vanishing (or changing) effect "moved" quite a few audiences during a World's Fair exhibit during the Freshmeadow's New York location in 1964-65. I know it wasn't in the Mark Wilson General Cigar exhibit, but it was there someplace, presented as a "time" travel sort of thing. Disney World in Florida had something similar also, a few years before DC used it. Although with Disney, the audience kind of knew what was happening. I would think that Franz Hararay revised this "Mega-Object Vanish" idea to a new level of both impact and practicality, don't you?
I also think I saw the DC method used during a carnival side-show exhibit back in the 60's, to make a horse vanish at Coney Island. I was just a kid, but I remember there could have been no other way. The stripes on the tent went side-ways, which was odd, and moved slightly with the wind? at the time of the vanish (which took forever). Only like 15 people were there too! I guess some wise-guy carny had an idea after a "Amusement Ride" broke down. I'd like to know Steinmeyer's inspiration for that one. I'm sure Jim took the concept to a new level as it looked amazing, "unbelievably" amazing. (lol) So many people invent the same thing, without knowing it's been done before. I had an idea once for something called a "wheel" but I never pursued it... stupid me! Sincerely, Matt

To those magicians who were around and working at the time of Copperfield's Statue vanish, what were your thoughts/reactions at the time? Did you feel it was a neat effect or simply a publicity stunt (like the way many of us view some of David Blaine's work today)?
Just curious to see how the illusion was received back when it first happened. |

It was not bad at all the way Copperfield did it.
You can't look at Copperfield and compare him to Blaine they are total opposites.

I like granny smith apples better then Florida oranges...But hey you can't compare apples and oranges. They are two different things. Thus you can't really compare Blaine and Copperfield.
Copperfield is an illusionist and Blaine is....well himself... My reaction. WOW....copperfield is top-notch Michael

I don't think a lot of them cry camera. You can still do it in front of audience. Just a controled audience.

I didn't mean to draw direct comparisons between Copperfield and Blaine.
I just meant to ask if those in the magic community at the time responded to the Liberty vanish with disdain or were they happy for Copperfield. Magicians, I've noticed, seem to be "love 'em or hate 'em", especially when "the next big thing" comes along. I was wondering if this had applied to Copperfield at the time when he pulled off the effect that pretty much firmly placed him on the map for all times. |

I was performing when DC vanished the Staue of Liberty-
I was still stunned & impressed to bits by the Lear Jet Vanish!-which made such an impression worldwide!! With the statue vanish-I was also impressed but not as much impact as the Lear Jet .Everyone was asking how did he do that!! It definetly raised the profile of Magic into the public eye again thanks to these TV specials! |
