Hello All!
I am looking for the best method to invisibly control a card to the top of a regular deck of cards without shuffling. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks. Chad |

You probably are looking for a pass, or the "tilt." There are hundreds of others. But I think these two would be a good bet. Lee Asher has one out that would probably work well for you as well. "Out of Control," I believe, is the name. Happy hunting.

I hate myself saying this: The Pass, Tiltless Tilt, Side Steal or putting another card instead in the middle of the pack.
Just think. mmG Roland ******* Or a double. |

The Bold Tilt to the Top. It's taught in Daryl's sleights series (Vol. 4).

You could use a lateral palm center steal for that. Very deceptive.

... or even Larry Jennings' Immediate Side Steal could work for this (Cf. Jennings, Thoughts on Cards). See someone performing it here:
http://www.magicvideodepot.com/view.php?a=v&t=404 There's also Gary Ouellet's Paradox Control (which looks decidely similar to the aforementioned Jennings move). He teaches it on the Very Best of Gary Ouellet DVD (Vol.3).

Hi guys!
You can use any multitude of passes, a side steal, (I prefer the one that Jack McMillen used), and something that I love and is my new best friend...the Charlie Miller Cascade Control. The last one is just a thing of beauty. Best, Dorian Rhodell |

Thanks guys. What is or where can I find Jack Fitzdean's Khyber Pass? I think a typical pass is beyond my ability... especially an invisible one. I am also not familiar with Koornwinder Kard Kontrol. I will look into the side steal... any good learning resources? Thanks.

This is totally dependent on skill level.
Unless you're pretty adept with the pasteboards, I'd advise that you forget the pass entirely and go with something like a double cut, Vinny's Top Gun Control, a crimp, locator card, etc. You could do a lifetime of commercial quality magic without ever using any version of the pass. This is only my opinion, of course. |

The double cut is possibly the least convincing method of controlling a card to the top there is. Vinny's Top Gun is excellent. So is the Side Steal.

To me, without shuffling implies without cutting or otherwise disturbing the deck. If the handling can be justified, one invisible method is to have the card touched when the deck is face up and do any turnover pass. This is not only invisible but a totally natural handling.

Maybe a top change.

I would also go with a side steal, or something I am surpised no one has mentioned--The Swivel Cut Control by Giles Coutre (spelling)...it looks less supicious than a double undercut and pretty as well.
You could also check out Lee Asher's Losing Control. Kelly

Two excellent and non-knuckle busting controls I regularly use are: Vinny's Top Gun Control (also mentioned by Bill above) and the "Wow Control" on Olivier Macia's "Control Freak" dvd. Macia's dvd is superb - one of the best I have purchased. I am learning much of the stuff on that dvd - controls, passes, changes, boomerang, spins, etc. because of the directness of the effects and the ease of learning them. I struggled a bit developing an adequate and invisible pass. However, I can do the pass he teaches on his dvd in slow motion with the spectators burning my hands and they do not see it - literally. Macia speaks French on the dvd but it is dubbed in English. (I have no personal connection with Olivier Macia.)

I would recommend that you learn the pass. It will become your best friend when performing a trick. It took me about 2 months to learn the basics, and mine is rather sloppy. But it really doesn't matter; you need to perfect your misdirection and you could pretty much do anything. With good misdirection, you could get a break above the card, and just cut the deck all while talking to the spectator. I've done it before, and I feel stupid doing it, but what really matters is whether or not your presentation is good.

It depends on how closely you want the card to the top of the deck. The pass is probably the best move but if you didn't mind it a few cards down then I like the bluff pass.

Also forgot to mention Ricky Smith's Cherry Control. I use that one a lot. It just feels nice...

I am thinking about the title of this interesting discussion.
What is speaking against a natural(!!!) shuffle of the deck? Chad, can you give us your reason(s) for the No-Shuffle the deck? |
