Social organization is everything. Many peoples have lived in sustainable social groups without much by the way of economics. (Pre-contact Inuit, for example.) It's not out of the question, but it's not obvious that people will live in such a way.

Hard to imagine what the transition from the current economic reality to a future state would/could look like. Really hard.

You're absolutely correct, John. But I'd counter that those social groups are generally quite small. For whatever reason, it appears that the larger the group, the more difficult it is to sustain such a (let's go ahead and say it: communist) economy.

Yeah size seems to really matter in this case.

The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.--Yeats

If everything was free, a farmer would not need to grow any more food than is required to feed his family ... nor would you be required to grow any more food than required to feed your family.

I know I know ... you don't want to grow your own food ... that is what I meant when I said "money creates a society of lazy people" ... people that would prefer to sit and watch their walmart TV than actually work for their own survival.

I still have high hopes that there is at least one person that will see this and realize the world that we live in is a lie:

Specialization is not equivalent to laziness.

Another of your premises that's questionable.

I do agree with this statement especially when the gov't is making it easier to get the free money.

And how will having free stuff (in place of free money) correct that problem?

All the money is free ... it is an illusion that doesn't actually exist anywhere in nature.

People that say the government can't just keep printing money need to realize that every single dollar ever printed was printed by the government, so what you really mean to say is they shouldn't be printing any of it in the first place.

Re pyramid workers--

From Joe's quoted article:

Quote:
Hawass said evidence from the site indicates that the approximately 10,000 laborers working on the pyramids ate 21 cattle and 23 sheep sent to them daily from farms.

Heck, I have an uncle who alone can eat that much in a single Thanksgiving dinner. If they weren't slaves, they were very exploited workers. I'm going to pass on that new economy if this is the meal ticket. And no tofurkey, even?

I never said it would. Only stated that giving out free money creates lazy people. Also creates drug problems for people since the one side blocked drug testing for those that receive assistance. Sad.....

I didn't mean to suggest that you'd said that.

It's sort of the whole (counter) theme of the thread.

I think it is all pretty self-explanatory, if you look for it you can see it.

Example: what was Danny's concern?? How he would get to watch TV ... money breeds lazy people that want to sit around and watch TV. Not Danny's fault mind you, it is what the system does to people; it is to be expected.

The truth is there is no reason Danny can't watch TV in a free world. In fact, he would probably end up getting to watch more of it. There is so much crap we do on this earth solely for money it is disgusting!

Milk - do you know that 40% of the milk in this country doesn't even get drank?? They will take twenty gallons of milk from a single cow every single day ... and half of it "expires' and gets thrown away. They don't even bother to take it out of the plastic jug so it can evaporate back into the clouds and rain back down on the earth again, it is just a total waste.

So here ya go: without money, farmers could take half the day off from milking cows and watch TV instead. Smile

I apologize to everyone I may offend
for recieving free money from my time
in service to this great nation.

What about those disabled veterans and
civilians whom are unable to cultivate
crops nor provide a service to the community beyond wisdom?

I'm enjoying my free large screen tv from Best Buy.

Do you think people will take down their veteran flags and bumper stickers because we stop using money?? No course not.

Only now the farmer only has to work half a day because we need less milk so because we do more with less he has more time to help the veterans and family and neighbors.

Everything is better without money.

Sorry, JoeJoe, but I toss this concept in with all those other theories and ideas in the 'Slim" trashcan. It's just not feasible in the real world: it's just not possible to make it happen.

Beyond that, it's all theory, philosophy and conjecture. Can't happen, never will, wouldn't work. Unless, of course, our Space Alien Overlords took over and started New Rules.

But, I'll admit, it's fun to think about.

Yet ... amazingly it already does work and is working ... there are tribal villages in the rain forests that have been living without money since man first learned to walk upright. No other "system" - (ie: socialism, capitalism, democracy, communism, etc) can say that.

So it is not that it "can't" exist - let us at least keep the conversation honest and admit people just don't want it to exist.

In a free world, you would not be required to grow any food.

Why do people grow grass in their front lawn?? Are they paid to do so?? No. do they get a discount at the grocery store for doing so?? No.

People grow lawns and spend money maintaining them for the sole purpose of looking good in front of their neighbors.

In a world where money has no value, things like food will have more value ... having a good fruit tree in your yard will be like having a Lexus parked in the driveway.

People will instinctively want the best garden on the block.

As long as we're keeping this conversation honest, let us admit that not all ideas are scalable.

You might take this opportunity to demonstrate that this one is.
