When I was a kid I got my first Rubik's Cube. After trying and trying I finally bought the booklet The Simple Solution To Rubik's Cube by James Nourse and was soon solving most cubes in under 3 minutes.
Well skip 45 plus years and now I cannot remember ALL the moves to solving the last layer. I still have the booklet and have the Mark Elsdon Rubik Remembered video BUT find it impossible at the YOUNGGGG age of 58 to remember all the moves and variations needed to solve the final layer. Anyone else have this situation? I know some of you will inform me of the system you use on the cube. But I think at this point I just cannot remember sequences of 10 or 15 moves. Also as a hobbyist, if I did finally learn it I would have to solve a cube every day or two FOREVER or I would forget the formula again. I would love to perform some Rubik's magic but might be stuck with just Daryl's Enchanted Cube. Which isn't a bad thing! |

Funny you mention this as I'm literally just sitting there solving one cube after another with the stop watch ticking.
Unlike you I never managed to solve the cube as kid but I learned it at the age of 41 from a very entertaining YouTube video (the one with the hamburger move and the parking car, if you know what I mean...). Those shortcuts are so special and weird that I had no hard time remembering them - just like in mnemonics where the crazy pictures easily stick to your mind. Admittedly, I slightly tweaked the system from the video and drew my own overview chart but even without practice (I had no cube in hand for half a year now until yesterday) I come down sometimes ever to 90 seconds (which is terrific for me), never exceeding 2.5 minutes though. I will try to find a similar tutorial in English and post it here, as the one I'm referring to is German.

Regarding the last layer, you can solve it using just 4 algorithms from the top cross to complete last layer solve. If the patern you are looking at is one you don't know the algorithm for, you can use an algorithm you do know to change the patern to fit your algorithm. This does add time to your solve but you can still get down to around 50 seconds.

Myke,
I'm curious. Who's solution method do you use for the final cross? Thanks for the response.... |

With the Petrus method, you should always end up with a cross on top when you have just solved the first two layers. I don't use that method so I always end up with 1 of 4 outcomes. Spot on top Algorithm: = (F-U-R-U'-R-'F') This will create the 3 spots that create a "Line Shape" on top. Rotate the cube so that "Line Shape" is from left to right and use "Line Shape Algorithm". Line Shape Algorithm: = (F-U-R-U'-R'-U-R-U'-R'-F') Creates a cross on top. L Shape Algorithm: = Rotate the cube so that the "L Shape" is in the back left, so it looks like a "Reversed L Shape". (F-U-R-U'-R'-F') Creates a cross on top. Cross Algorithm: = No algorithm, perfect outcome. Cube Orientation Notation: -------- F = Front side of cube (facing you) U = Upper side L = Left side R = Right side D = Down side Algorithm Notation: ------------------ F = turn front side clockwise by 90 degrees. F' = turn front side counter-clockwise by 90 degrees. U = turn upper side clockwise by 90 degrees. U' = turn upper side counter-clockwise by 90 degrees. R = turn right side clockwise by 90 degrees. R' = turn right side counter-clockwise by 90 degrees. Myke X |

I learnt it from this video and can do it in just over a minute most times now, I tried other videos but found this one the best, hope this helps!

Thanks to everyone for their tips on how to solve the cube!
I am now almost able to solve it fully. Does anyone know of a formula to just rotate a single edge piece keeping everything else in place? Thank you... pic host |

If you have a cube with everything solved with the exception of one flipped edge then the cube isn't put together properly. The edge needs to be taken out flipped to its correct orientation and then replaced back in the cube. Have you checked out this yet? ->. www.magiccubefx.com |

Thank you John George.
I am using the Mark Elsdon method and the final algorithm to orient the last two edge pieces is 22 moves. I am having a very hard time remembering this sequence. Hopefully in time it will stick in my brain ! |

Myke, you need to put your work into a book or video!
Seriously helpful stuff here. James

That was great! Maybe you could add afterwards "It should look like it's solved because everybody knows that would be impossible!"
Great job Myke. James Quote: On Sep 5, 2015, Myke Phillips wrote:
