I love eggs. They are pretty much the perfect breakfast food except for one thing. They're nasty to clean up. Egg on the plate can't go into the dishwasher or else the egg becomes a second glaze.

Any tips on quickly cooking eggs in a way that doesn't make it a PITA to clean up the plates?

Soft boiled eggs still leave a cleanup issue. Hard boiled eggs are one possibility. A bit dull, but definitely a solution.

I generally make scrambled eggs or omelettes, and don't have clean-up problems.

What species of skillet do you use?

I saw a wonderful show on public TV (PBS) called Mind of a Chef. The entire show was on eggs. They had one method which could work for you. The scrambled egg was poured into a pot of briskly stirred boiling water. The PBS site just went down as I was looking for the link. Smile

So I assume you don't soak your plates. A simple soak will loosen the yolk and it can be wiped away easily.

I'd suggest:

Lay down a thin layer of whatever condiment you'd put on top of your eggs. Or you could oil your plate with O/O or butter...If you have a Trader Joe's nearby, use a small dollop of their Garlic Olive Oil. Spread it around with a bit of bread or toast...slap the eggs on top. A quick rinse clears the plate, the dishwasher does the rest.

Good stuff guys.

Tom, interesting idea. I don't quite follow, but I'll search for the show. Thanks.

The real issue is my daughter. She microwaves her scrambled eggs and the bowl requires soaking. It's a nutritious and quick breakfast, but grrr.

Hand wash your plates and utensils immediately after eating your eggs.

I simply rinse my plate before putting it in the dishwasher if I know I had something that hardens and is difficult to remove.

Um ... don't too many eggs increase your cholesterol level?

Not a huge problem, according to the Mayo clinic website.

Quote:
Chicken eggs are high in cholesterol, but the effect of egg consumption on blood cholesterol is minimal when compared with the effect of trans fats and saturated fats.

The risk of heart disease may be more closely tied to the foods that accompany the eggs in a traditional American breakfast — such as the sodium in the bacon, sausages and ham, and the saturated fat or oils with trans fats used to fry the eggs and the hash browns.

Most healthy people can eat up to seven eggs a week with no increase in their risk of heart disease. Some studies have shown that this level of egg consumption may actually prevent some types of strokes.

But the story is different for people who have diabetes. In this ever-growing population, eating seven eggs a week significantly increases the risk of heart disease.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, one large egg has about 186 mg milligrams (mg) of cholesterol — all of which is found in the yolk.

When deciding whether to include eggs in your diet, consider the recommended daily limits on cholesterol in your food:

If you are healthy, consume no more than 300 mg of cholesterol a day.
If you have diabetes, high cholesterol or heart disease, limit the daily cholesterol intake to no more than 200 mg a day.
If you like eggs but don't want the extra cholesterol, use only the egg whites. Egg whites contain no cholesterol. You may also use cholesterol-free egg substitutes, which are made with egg whites.

Poached eggs are simple, leave no mess and nestle nicely in pockets in a pile of hash.

Of course. But if there's a smart way to make it easier on her (and me when I scramble eggs), it'll be better for everybody.

Have you looked for a microwave specific item for cooking scrambled eggs?

Found a few tips (e.g. use cooking spray oil) but I'm still open to any suggestions from here.

I did find the PBS link. I like the scrambling in water idea. Definitely giving that a try. Thanks, Tom.
