I am hoping that I can get some help with this gaff. Can anyone tell me who makes the largest and nicest silk to egg gimmick. I know some on the market are quite small and I'd like to avoid these.

Viking Magic - plaster type egg large
Bob Sanders - plaster type egg large James Rainho - Simplex Magic - plastic egg Tirofog, Inc. - Eggs-Actly Eggs - comes in small medium and large. Made from real eggs. Tenyo Silk to Egg plastic - have to paint the outer egg to stop transparency. Have not purchased the kits with DVD so cannot comment. I have found only Vernet self-contained egg to be way to small for adult hands. |

Thank you do you have any idea, of course roughly, which will hold the largest silk?
It's very hard to tell from a photo what size silk an egg will hold. |

Bob Sanders and Viking are the largest. Bob Sanders says his will hold a 24" silk comfortably. I believe Viking and Triofog X-large will also hold a 24" silk.
I like to use 15" and 18" silks, not big on taking a long time to stuff a silk in the fist, unless you have really great patter. I find the medium egg exactly right for my hand and silks. I would like to point out, if you are not going to use a 24" silk, then you will have a problem with manipulating the egg. Also if your hands are not large enough to cover the X-large eggs, then you will not be successful performing the trick well and with confidence. |

I have used the silk to egg bit since 1946. 5,000 people in the grandstand on fair dates could see my 18" silk! (and, the egg!)
A larger silk doesn't make the effect ("Effect" is what the spectator(s) see, or think they see.) any better. I bought 3 eggs (real eggs with plastic lining) from Harold Sterling in 1955. I am now using the THIRD egg. (They DO wear out! I think Dan Ford (he's "on" the Café) still makes the feke from real eggs. Bill has given you the correct information -- especially regarding 24" silks. You could, of course, use a diamond cut silk if you MUST use a larger silk.

An easy comparison for size is that our ceramic egg is made to be an exact match for Grade A Large eggs (like Tyson's sold by WalMart). (Remember that this old marketing professor lived in Arkansas for years. LOL) In one of my routines the gimmicked egg is actually put into a carton of real eggs. The eggs are available in both white or brown and will hold a 24" square silk or SIX 2" sponge balls. These eggs clean up with No More Tears Baby Shampoo. (In the Walk-Around routine spectators actually handle the eggs and in restaurants that can mean butter, salad dressing, etc. on your eggs.)
Another point I see nobody mentioning is that the holes in these eggs are large enough for an adult male thumb. That can really matter. (They also don't snag silks.) |
