Hmmm, he will have a tough time fooling Teller as Teller has no doubt read all of his previous material. However I am really looking forward to seeing Roth perform again with hopefully something new. The Table section in his book is full of my favourite coin routines and it would be brilliant if he added something on a par with those.

Watched the David Roth segment. Was David nervous do you think, or does he have a touch of Parkinson's disease ? His hands shook quite a bit, and I never have seen that when he has performed on TV before.

David Roth was wonderful tonight, and even more wonderful was the great respect and reverence Penn & Teller showed a true giant in magic. I was very proud, moved and in awe of this great, great man and the tremendous respect shown to him. He deserved it, he earned it!
He did some of his great coin magic tonight and he did it proportionately as well as he might've done it when he was 20, 30, 40 or even 50+. He was just as amazing to me as he's always been. Oh, and he won! Last time I spoke with him I was telling him Happy Birthday, now I cheer "Congratulations," once again, Mr. Roth…Much respect to him, and to Penn & Teller for the extraordinary touch of class they showed in still recognizing a true Champion…A rose by any other name…

Classic Roth last night. I am concerned about the shaking though. I hope he is okay. The complete vanish routine at the last is a killer. Congratulations David.

Frankly, I don't mind shaky hands. However, bad camera angles, bad editing, bad sound on the web and reduced screen. The producers should learn a few "camera tricks" to present his performance with the level of quality it deserves.
Still you can see him starting at 27.08 here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXsbz60U47I |

I've been a student of David's books since 1976.
Along with his piece and P & T's comments on Roth's work, I enjoyed the P & T talk about our country and it's flag! Harris still 2 old to know it all.

Here's a link to the show:
http://www.cwtv.com/shows/penn-teller-fo......c4c6b19a It pains me to say that David, who was one of the greatest coin artists ever, looked shaky with miss-steps in his performance which was pretty bad. Could be he is suffering from some early Parkinson's type issues. There are several visible instances of palmed coins/halves able to be seen in his "covering" hand due to gaps in his fingers where the lighting/camera picks them up. Worse, at the 27:30 - 27:34 mark of the above link, he makes a serious mistake - dropping a palmed coin/half when he sets the cup down....the coin bounces on table behind the cup before camera quickly cuts to Teller watching....No way Penn or Teller didn't see that. It seemed obvious that Penn & Teller were not fooled at all by David but out of respect & appreciation for all he meant to magic they didn't want to bust him and saw that he got the "Fooler" trophy.....this was much the same as when they gave Greg Wilson the trophy after he produced his father & mother (Mark & Nani)from the box at the end.....they were in no way fooled but felt like they were doing the right and honorable thing by NOT saying "you didn't fool us" and letting them walk with the "Fooler" trophy. |

However, sugar coating it to say "David Roth was fantastic on Fool Us" would be disingenious at best and at worst, a lie in order to refrain from any criticism. Mostly everyone here on this forum is in some way "in the know" and I was submitting a factual, truthful response to the performance Mr. Roth gave. Also, I doubt a large majority of "civilians" would catch much of what was wrong - that is not the make up of this forum which is composed of practitioners of magic & sleight of hand and my post was geared towards that group as a no B.S. type of review. |

I wasn't thinking that you were getting any enjoyment out of this, just wishing you could've shown the greater part of valor that Penn & Teller chose to show, seemingly from greater perspective. I think everyone here could see what you saw quite clearly to illustrate, and then probably wondered as I did why such use of of such vivid color in evaluating an old Master clearly trying to do the best he could from just a bit of the treasure trove of excellence he actually created, all with the essence of time touching his every move, perhaps keeping him a few steps behind the once unquestionable perfection he has given us all in the art. So, y'see, we watched the same show, the same man, the same giant, and you seem to see broken pieces where I see moreso conquest, punctuation and respect. We tell different truths here, clearly for different reasons, probably from different perspectives, and so let's just allow people to decide for themselves from their own vantage points of where they are in this life. Good journey to you.

Your explanation (and 2 posts) explain it all. I get what you're saying but this forum is not the place for "pay no attention to that man behind the curtain" type conversation. Just to be clear, I would never point out any of the errors or mistakes I saw to family members or the general public if I was watching it with them in order to prove what I knew or try to tear him down....that would be unthinkable to me. What is also unthinkable is that I could ever hope to be as good as David Roth was in his prime. However, and again this is not meant to insult Mr. Roth at all, but I think his did a disservice to his former self by attempting to do these tricks of he was not up to it (which he was not, obviously) or especially to do so on a nationally syndicated program which people can record, play back in slow-mo, etc. What is also somewhat troubling is the idea that he may not even know he might not be performing as well as he may think. I'm sure in front of a small live group of people sans cameras and the bright lights he can still amaze but, unfortunately, his performance on Fool Us was dissapointing. |

Seeing David get the Fool Us trophy put a tear in my eye. I give Penn and Teller a big round of applause for honoring David
the way they did. Granted, they were not fooled. But like Penn said "I read YOUR books." David did his published routines. Now think back and wonder what would have happened if there was no David Roth Coin Magic book and years later you see this elderly man performing coin magic like you just saw.You probably would have been fooled. Even after seeing some of the fumbling that accrued. David Roth is a legend and always will be. He has been a legend in my heart for over 32 years now. And for many more. To the younger kids out there... Please do not disrespect the greats. You too will get old, and sad to say your abilities will also suffer. Once again I want to give thanx to Penn and Teller. And for all the people here that said "YES David Roth, YOU FOOLED US.." |
