In about 18 hours, I'll be touching down in Vegas! I promised the wife when the 401k matured I would take her to Vegas. She wants to see "Love," the Beatles Circe Sole show. (She wants to go to Japan, Liverpool or Vegas, of the three, I could manage Vegas.)
We're staying from Mon. to Thurs. at the Luxor. I'll post more when I get there.

Before I left the States I went to Vegas every 60 days. I preferred staying at Treasure Island and had the rooms comped. It's been 12 years since I have been there. Have fun.

"Love" is my second favorite cirque show in Vegas. My favorite is "Mystere" at Treasure Island. If you get a chance don't miss Mac King at Harrah"s. For the price it is the best ticket on the strip.

I've been to Vegas 6 times. Most of the time I stay at the Monte Carlo. You can get great deals by signing up for their emails. I usually pay about $250 for 4 nights. I did stay at the Luxor once.
If you like buffets, be sure to catch a free shuttle or take a cab to the RIO and maybe check out Penn & Teller while there. The Bellagio buffet is nice too. I usually walk or take the bus to travel the strip and take a bus to Freemont. You can get buss passes pretty cheap. |

Don't forget to catch Mac King Show at Harrah's in the afternoon. He is usually Dark (show closed) on Monday. She likes Beatles era music, catch The Jersey Boys at Paris, Paris.

Great place to visit, Vegas. Make the most of it!
Performing there can be fun, too, if it's a one-night gig or maybe a 3-night appearance. But longer stints (for example three weeks or a month or longer) can get very depressing. |

On Sep 6, 2015, ZachDavenport wrote: Zach, because "behind the scenes" in Vegas, there's NOTHING to do. If you're the house entertainer at a certain hotel, you don't get a chance to see other shows, because their acts are performing at the same time as you are. But even if you do get to see some other shows, the novelty wears off quickly. Then all that's left to do is cruise the other hotels and watch tourists and/or desperate folks squandering their savings. That gets to be pretty depressing. The main purpose of the hotel casinos is to make money. And everything is strictly controlled to facilitate that. For example, they pipe in oxygen to help people stay awake longer, so they'll keep gambling. So unless gambling is your thing, there's nothing else to do. Because besides the casinos, the suburbs and outskirts of town are very shabby. Basically just poor housing for the many hotel employees. And that is a really depressing sight. Most of the restaurant waitresses are worn-out, aging showgirls, or wanna-be show girls who never made it, or got pregnant and had to quit their careers. You can see the disappointment in their eyes. That's also very depressing. And as a casino employee, there's also an ominous awareness of being watched all the time. I worked the casino circuit solidly for a full year, spending a month or longer at different hotels in Vegas, Reno, Tahoe and Atlantic City. And the "back room boys" had a file on every one of us. They knew our habits, what we liked to drink at the bar, where we went by day or night, what kinds of girls we liked, what gambling tables we frequented, even what our drug preferences were. So you really had to watch your step. And that's also very depressing! I could go on, but I think you get the picture ... |

Wow. That DOES sound depressing Arthur. It makes me wonder if those performing on cruise ships have a similar opinion!
There is at least one thing to do in Vegas if you're into it. Red Rock Canyon is a great and beautiful rock climbing location! |

Now you're talking, Rockwall. Sounds great if you're into rock climbing.
Just to be clear: I don't mean to portray Las Vegas as a complete downer. Like I said in my first post, it's a great place to visit briefly and have fun. And as a performer, it's a fantastic place to do a one-night stand, or maybe a 2 or 3 night appearance. |

Yea I think I have found the EXACT opposite. But mileage might vary.
The "back room boys" at another company have NO CLUE who you are. Nor do they care. NONE are going to follow everyone on staff off property. It is too expensive. It just does not happen. That at best is an urban legend I am afraid. PLUS what I think you are saying, and I agree if it is, is that Vegas has a LOT of "noise" in order to compete for the dollar of a tourist. Being entrenched in that "noise" an a constant basis can get tiresome FAST. Any more 90% of entertainers are not really "casino employees". Most are 4 wall deals. It depends on the "suburb" you choose to live in. I live an hour outside the strip and it is FAR from depressing. It is golf courses and great places to live. I think you need to choose wisely. Much like ANYWHERE you choose to live. As for wait staff you could say the same of LA or New York or Chicago. But if you go to better restaurants (For example Lowrey's The Prime Rib.) you meet people making over a 100 grand a year, happy to be doing what they are and average length of employment is about 5 years or more. As for not seeing other shows, well that is the life anyhow. But many other shows often have 2 a days so seeing them is not too hard. Out of curiosity when was the last time you did this in Vegas? The information seems either out dated or at an entry level of entertainer. If you are talking about any level of entertainer, much less headliner the story you portray is nothing like the experience.

Thanks everybody! I'm going to Houdini's Magic Shop (which seems to have moved to the Venitian and not New York, New York where my wife remembered if being the last time SHE was there.) and I'll try and pick up a few shows. But this is actually my wife's trip. I'm just paying for it and going along from the ride.

I second the recommendation on Mac King. Don't let the 'low' price fool you. I rank it as the best magic show to see in Vegas. I don't know if your wife is into magic shows but even if shes not, this show is just pure entertainment, magic or not and won't get in the way of seeing a big budget evening show if you want to see one of those too. Buffet's have gotten a LOT more expensive than they used to be. Hope you guys have a good time.
