Another advantage to Mac is that the show is in the afternoon. That is a time often not thought of for planning on vacations and you can sneak it in. I think as for pure entertainment he is one of the best. Not magic, but being entertained.

Next time I go, I am going to make sure to see Mac King. For some reason I've never made to his show.

I am sorry Ed. It was pure curiosity. I certainly do not think it is worth a flame war. My friend you are entitled to enjoy and not enjoy whichever acts you want, for any reasons you want.

On Sep 6, 2015, Dannydoyle wrote: Danny, as a headliner I played casinos all over the world about 8 or 9 years ago - in the USA, Canada, Europe, and Australia - as part of Frampton's band. These were mostly one-night stands, or sometimes 2 or three consecutive nights. And the experience was always great. We were treated like kings. But you may have hit on something there about the time period ... my impressions of the casino circuit as I described it negatively, were formed further back in time, in 1982 thru '83. That's when I was musical director for the "new" Mamas and the Papas. We headlined for longer periods of time at several casinos. As the "house band" we were treated like hotel employees. For example, I ate my meals with the secretaries, workmen and other Teamsters staff "behind the scenes." Being stuck in one place for three or four weeks at a time, with nothing to do in our free time, and nowhere to go but other hotels, really wore all the band members down. The very controlled environment also dragged us down. Every night, a troupe of dancing girls opened for us. As soon as they were done, the curtain closed and we had two minutes to set up for our performance. Yes, that's TWO MINUTES! Our roadies solved this problem by setting up my keyboards, the drums, guitar and bass amps on flat platforms with casters. So they just rolled everything into place, set up the 4 mic stands in front, plugged in the cables, and as the curtain opened, there we were, playing the opening chords of our first song. We were contracted to play a 35 minute set. No more, and no less. If we went over, the curtain was lowered ... even though we might not have finished the last song! Because time is money. The casino bosses wanted those people in our audience back in the gaming rooms! So, in a 35 minute set, all we could really play were the M's & P's biggest hits. No new material. Night after night of the same songs gets tiresome pretty quickly. Everybody gradually got more and more disillusioned. After a year of this, traveling back and forth to Vegas, Reno, Tahoe and Atlantic City, the principal singers ended up hating each other. Which ultimately led to the group breaking up. About being watched: The "Big Eye In The Sky" and the files I mentioned on each of the band members is an absolute fact. Our tour manager got to know the back room bosses pretty well. In fact later, with their support, he joined the Teamsters and eventually became a movie transportation captain for Universal (in charge of all the vehicles and transportation for movies). He told me the bosses had shown him all the background info they had on us. In particular our tour manager related to me a couple of risky late-night back-and-forth trips I had taken in a taxi ... which he had not been aware of, but was told about by the "back room boys." They also once tried to incriminate me in sting operation, but that's another story. Danny, if you're happy living in Las Vegas I apologize for trashing your town. Maybe if you're making the big bucks and you have a nice house with a golf course in a nice area, you can enjoy the glitz and glimmer and ignore the dark side. Not me. Unfortunately I'm cursed to see behind the facade, and beneath that, all the seediness. I find gambling establishments, and gambling towns, to be depressing. I've met enough underworld characters to know how corrupt, immoral and unethical the entertainment industry is. I see the shallowness, the meaninglessness and the futility of it all. When you're trapped in such an environment - with nothing else to do and nowhere else to go - you get to meet and converse with ordinary local people who are employed in menial jobs. And when you hear their stories, you are overcome with a sense of hopelessness. Important Note To Ed: Sorry to have pried open this can of worms! My comments about Las vegas are solely my own opinions, based upon my own experiences. These observations do not represent the views of any other individual. I hope you have a wonderful and exciting time in Vegas. Have fun, enjoy yourself, and above all ... make sure your wife is happy! |

Yes these are your own portable demons and have nothing to do with the town. 30 years ago with a group 20 years past their prime. Come be the vocal director for our new project and see how much different things are.
The entertainment business is what you make of it. Much like life.

Hey Danny, I had no idea you were such a big shot.
What team are you the vocal director for? And where are you appearing? |

Dannydoyle Eternal Order 21214 Posts |
I am not a vocal director I said I needed one. We are producing another project.
Sorry for your confusion. No need to be sarcastic. You were the one who posted 30 year old information about a town you spent a few days in. This is not my town. I grew up in Chicago and lived in a million places since. We just moved here to do the show. Sorry this brings out the sarcasm in you.

Love is an amazing production and they just revamped it some. Just a killer show. Lots of people hate on Cirque but this production is worth seeing.
The Mob Museum downtown is worth the trip. The whole downtown experience is worth a look as well. They have a Houdinis in the Miracle Mile shops in Planet Hollywood. If you're wife wants to shop it can be 2 birds with one stone. I should also add that The Pinball Hall Of Fame is on Tropicana and not far at all. I really enjoy the place. If you are a pinball geek like me you may enjoy. Even an old Doctor Who pinball machine!

And just for the record, when I was with the M's & P's, people flocked to see us. And all the bands that opened for us on road dates, like Gary Puckett and the Union Gap, The Association, The Turtles, etc. Sold out shows everywhere we went. Even today, music lovers go to see "oldies" bands. One of our own NVMS members recently caught Heart and Lynyrd Skynyrd. And even Ed's wife wants to hear Beatles songs in Las Vegas. How outdated is their music? 50 years? How big a part did their music play in making this Cirque production successful? Might be something to be learned there. (Unless, of course, people prefer a rap concert). |

I heard there was a Houdini's at the Venetian. Is that the one at Planet Hollywood?
We're here by the way. A nice, simple room. This is going to be fun.

Ed, I know many, myself included, that feel the same way about supporting P&T. It’s their loss not ours.
But do enjoy your trip. Plenty to see for sure. I would love going back. Tom

I like P&T, love their show Fool Us and the old BullSh!t show but I went to their magic show and while entertaining, I just find it too talky. But that may just be me.
I understand the new Ferris Wheel, the High Roller, is the tallest in the world, even bigger than the Eye in London. (It didn't look as big to me, being next to all those tall hotels). That would probably be a fun evening ride when Vegas is all lit up. |

Different strokes I guess. We really enjoyed our trip in the Eye. And 71 Google reviews rate it a very high average of 4.3 out of 5. But I'll agree. Not a good place for cranky old men.
