I didn't know what he cost. But looking at the costs of everything ELSE I'm looking at here in Vegas...
I mean, I bought two slices of pizza and a large soda and it cost almost $20!

"Love"
Wow. We got there barely in time for the curtain and, because our tickets were in the middle of the row, they gave us other seats a couple of rows back and in the corner. I'm sitting there watching the warm up people walking around and there were three scrims hanging from the ceiling. I couldn't see half of what was going on because it was in front of one of those scrims and I thought; "Is this it? Am I going to sit here watching a THIRD of "Love." How's Dotti going to handle it? She's going to start crying any second..." Then they hit THE chord. (There are TWO major chords in Beatles music, the piano chord that ends A Day In The Life and the guitar chord that opens "A Hard Day's Night." They played the "Hard Day's Night" chord, the scrims dropped and there wasn't a bad seat in the house for the next hour and a half. There were references to the Beatles history. It opened with Liverpoolians dancing around brick walls which then exploded as the Blitz devestated (sp) England. The Volkswagen from "Abby Road" passes through several times. Other than that, there were a lot of great "Cirque Solei" bits. Women flying from the ceiling. Bizarre, almost steampunky devices coming through the area. At one point, a guy swinging from the ceiling on a platform was so impressive, I lost track of the actual song being played. Then there was roller bladeing to "Help" as well as other fascinating acts. There was an odd bit involving a guy who would come onstage while other stuff was going on. He'd be carrying a bouquet of yellow flowers and would keep trying to get the attention of any of several girls in the chorus. I didn't realize I was waiting for it until a group of punks and policemen brought in a phone booth (a red phone booth, no "Dr. Who" references here) and started leaping onto trampoleens (sp) leaping onto and off the phone booth. (If you've watched Cirque Solei clips, you'll notice they always do the trampoleen bit somewhere in the show.) The show was incredible on several levels and frankly I didn't want it to end! One of the ushers mentioned that they were retooling the show next year with different songs, so we're going to have to come back.

Dinner tonight.
Stuff didn't go well tonight, Dotti's dialysis ran late and then her phone died so she couldn't tell me she was on her way back so I could bring down her scooter. She got annoyed, saying I should have realized she was coming and been downstairs waiting. My thought was that, when she didn't see me and as she had to pass the concerige to get to the elevator, she could have had him CALL me to bring down the scooter. But I didn't stay married 36 years by fueling arguments.) We went over to Excalibur's for dinner. (The Luxor has several nice restaurants, but Excalibur's is more lively.) We were planning Johnny Rockets when we passed Dick's Last Resort. www.excalibur.com/DicksLastResort Dick's is a ramshackle looking place where the waitstaff is deliberately rude. Over the course of the meal, you'll be given a paper hat with a characterization written on it by your waitress. The food was excellent. And, if you like saucy humor, the waitstaff is wonderful. www.dickslastresort.com/grub/images/NP_Menu.pdf Tomorrow, we go back to "Love" to browse the gift shop with a side trip to the Venetian to look at the Houdini's there (The people at the New York New York Houdini's suggest I'd look there because it's a larger shop.) and a trip to Madame Tussand's. I went to the one in NYC a couple of years ago and I might actually not wimp out at the "horror" section this time.

I will point out by the way that I am a very lazy person. So much so that changing my computer time isn't worth the effort since I'd just have to change it back when I get home. (HAD to change the watch, I wear it all day and the phone changed itself!)
So each of my posts are three hours off. Subtract three hours from each post to see when I actually posted it. (i.e., it is now actually 7:59 am)

This is so.
"Titanic" We're staying at the Luxor (it's the big pyramid Chris Angel levitated over). They have two standing exhibits. One is "Bodies" artwork made with human bodies. I have not seen it. I WILL not see it. Wow. The other exhibit is "Titanic - The Artifact Exhibition" It was $35.00 plus $5.00 for an "audio wand" that would augment the experience. They gave us the history of the Titanic in strict lineal progression and with observations from the passengers. Buying our tickets, we got a "boarding pass" for the Titanic giving our class, and name. (Name of an actual passenger on the ship.) When you first enter, you see film of the building and launching of the Titanic with tools from the ship that were used by the engineers to keep the ship operating. You go through a door, and you are in a corridor from Third Class with the sound of the engines throbbing through the walls. They showed us what a typical steerage cabin looked like (four bunk beds with a nightstand against the wall.) While the voice explained that on typical ships, Third Class was a dormitory like arrangement with up to a dozen people all rooming together. Then we walked into a representation of the Grand Staircase with a model of a First Class cabin. (You could pose for a picture standing on the Grand Staircase and if you wanted, you could have the picture printed with a "ghost" the Captain standing behind you.) The next door you go through, brings you out on the deck. The air conditioning is up to the maximum and there are stars out there over the railing. Then, you walk through another door and there is a huge piece of ice. You are encouraged to put your hand up against the ice, being told that the salt water was actually COLDER than the ice and most of the victims of the sinking DIDN'T drown, but died much more horribly by freezing to death in the water. Then you pass though the actual exhibits, the dishes that had passed onto the bottom within a cabinet which then rotted around the dishes, leaving them in perfect order on the bottom of the sea. You also saw identified items and a story about the people who left them. Most of them died. One person was supposed to be on another ship, but had his ticket transferred to the Titanic when the previous ship was grounded due to a coal strike. He was supposed to meet with a friend, but the Titanic was leaving three days earlier than the other ship had been scheduled and he had to miss meeting his friend. He wrote a letter to the friend complaining bitterly about having to take the earlier ship and ending it with; "...as far as I'm concerned, the Titanic can go to the bottom of the sea." "The Biggest Piece" was an actual piece of the hull size of a large wall with cracked portholes. Another person was a professional adventurer who's best friend had his luggage passed up to the Titanic when he didn't show up on time, figuring he would show up at the last minute as he usually did. He didn't realize that his friend was going to miss the Titanic completely because he'd been shanghied and forced to work on another boat. A few weeks later he managed to escape the ship he was on in Egypt and made his way back to America. One last person was a famous fashion reporter of the day (I don't remember her name) who had a bad feeling about getting on the ship and tried to get her luggage insured only to be told that, as the Titanic was "unsinkable," there would be no reason to insure the luggage! She was quoted that she had a feeling that she was never going to reach New York on that boat. The last room was the responses from the press and public over the disaster, with a wall showing three lists, people from each class and each class broken into two lists of survivors and victims. My passenger had died. Then we exited the exhibit into the souvenir shop, which kind of killed the moment. They mentioned that "the biggest piece" is on loan to the exhibit until 2018. Whether the exhibit stays after that is unknown. If you have a chance to be in Vegas between now and 2018, I can recommend this exhibit completely.

The Titanic Exhibit sounds great. When I went to Vegas I gambled a lot, so I never had to pay for meals, rooms, or drinks. I assume you are just going for the shows?

Thanks for that vivid description of the exhibit, Ed. I am fascinated with Titanic memorabilia. One of my distant relatives, the English journalist W.T. Stead, was on board. It is reported that after the ship struck the iceberg, Stead helped several women and children into the lifeboats, and gave his life jacket to another passenger. A survivor reported seeing him clinging to a raft before drowning.

1998 was a rather good year for gambling, but I usually came out ahead at the end of the trip. I remember one time where I had been gambling for 23 hours and won $320 in a single payout on a slot. I think I was at Venetian. I know there was a live jazz band playing and I was enjoying the free drinks. There was an option on the slot to double the win by choosing red or black for a virtual roulette feature on the slot. I don't know why, but I decided to risk the $320 and chose black. It came out red. Now, I would never put down a $320 bet on a roulette wheel and I sat there for a few moments in a stupor. I realized it would be a good idea to stop for the night and go to bed. Lesson learned and all.

Ouch, Nairb! That's the kind of moment that takes you aback. But I'm sure we've all been there, at least once in our lives.
One time, late at night, my keyboard roadie and I were enjoying the free drinks at the blackjack tables. After a couple of hours we were wasted, so we decided to sit in the little seating area by the Keno board. We placed bet after bet, but were so drunk we couldn't even walk the 4 feet to get to the counter! So we had the waitresses (who kept bringing us drinks) place our bets for us! It was daylight by the time we stumbled up to our rooms! |

We spent the rest of the time stopping at different hotels for half an hour or so to try and recharge the scooter. We finally ended up flagging down a handicapped enabled taxi that took us the rest of the way. (I was also supposed to do the Venetian to see Madame Tussan's and the Houdini's Magic Shop there because the New York, New York shop said they were bigger. But it didn't happen.) A couple of years (WDW next year) we're going to try again.

Eating;
Let me finish this up by bringing up food. We ate at a couple of places. Breakfast was the buffet at the Excalibur the first morning, the second morning, the wife wanted to try the buffet at the Luxor which was under the casino. Both were good, but the Luxor buffet was actually better both in food quality and decor. The Excalibur was a simple buffet like you'd see anywhere, but the Luxor, since it was designed to look like an Egyptian pyramid, the buffet UNDER it looked like an unfinished excavation with scaffolding and lumps of cement looking like unfinished digs. The food was spectacular, chicken fried steak, omelets, sausage, eggs benedict, etc. I'll tell you more about the other restaurants later, it's very late and I'm going to bed.

Back to eating. The first day we went to the food court. (I'd wanted to go to "The PUBlic House," but they didn't open until 4:00!) The second day, buffet at Excalibur and dinner at "Dick's Last Resort" Wednesday, buffet at the Luxor (a better buffet both in food and atmosphere) (French toast with caramel and bananas, I am probably ruined for French Toast forever!) and dinner at Gordon Ramsay's Pub and Grill at Ceaser's Palace. I cheeseburgers and fries. I am probably ruined for anyone else's cheeseburgers and fries!

Leaving;
We were supposed to catch a 12:00 bus to make a 1:00 flight from Vegas to Dulles. At the last minute, Dotti decided to change the time to 11:00. Good thing. Las Vegas Airport is HUGE and we'd have never made the boarding time if we'd left an hour early. As in Dulles, on the flight down, they asked if anyone would be willing to check their carry on bags for free to free up overhead room. So I did, and they told me I wouldn't have to pick up the bags in Dulles, they'd be sent directly to Providence. The flight back was actually nicer than the flight up. Dotti and I weren't seated together, sadly, but she had more room in her section than I did (although, my legroom was better than the flight down.) This flight had the screens built into the back of the seat in front of you and, as it was a four hour flight, I was able to watch "Tomorrowland" (flawed, but enjoyable) and the last half of "Inside Out" (very, VERY good, I recommend it highly) digression; I'd spent the entire weekend trying to get Windows Media Player and Real Player to run the DVD I'd brought from home. WMP thought it was a blank disk and Real Player told me I wasn't hooked up to Real Systems so it couldn't do anything. It wasn't until I was sitting in Dulles that I found out I had "Power DVD" still on the hard drive that just needed to be reinstalled. Yay. Oh, Dulles Airport. We were supposed to hit Dulles 9:00 local time with a one hour layover. While on flight, Dotti used her iPhone to find out that the Dulles/Providence flight was delayed! We hit Dulles just before 9, worked our way to the correct gate. (Why isn't your connecting flight EVER in the same area as the flight you just got off of?) and sat there until 11:59 when they announced the flight had ARRIVED, but wasn't ready for boarding. We didn't leave Dulles until 12:35, got to Providence at 1:35 and waited over half an hour in line for a taxi! Got home about 2:30 and sat up with the guys swapping stories about Vegas until 3:30. That's it guys. Glad you liked the stories.

I wasn't there on Saturday. The trip was Monday to Thursday. I DID discover that there are several "Houdini's Magic Shops" throughout Las Vegas.
I only got to go to the one at New York, New York. Next trip, there will be visits to the others.
