Lunatic fringe
I know you're out there You're in hiding And you hold your meetings I can hear you coming We know what you're after We're wise to you this time We won't let you kill the laughter Lunatic fringe In the twilight's last gleaming This is open season But you won't get too far 'Cause you gotta blame someone For your own confusion But I'm on guard this time Against your final solution We can hear you coming No you're not going to win this time We can hear the footsteps Out along the walkway Lunatic fringe We all know you're out there Can you feel the resistance? Can you feel the thunder?
We shall meet in the place where there is no darkness...

I would say sometyhing like: Abandon hope all ye who enter.
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

I really really hate it when people quote song lyrics at these types of events. A speaker is invited to share his or her thoughts, advice, or observations. Quoting song lyrics is impersonal and lazy. When I graduated from college, the speaker quoted the lyrics from Walt Disney World's "Carousel of Progress". On top of that, he was doing it in his grandest, most dramatic fashion. I imagine I was rolling my eyes and sighing heavily, wondering why in the world he was there.

Yep, that's the one (although now it's back to the original, "It's a great big beautiful tomorrow ..."). But he recited the ENTIRE song! LOL! I thought (hoped?) he might stop at one or two lines.

Who remembers any commencement speech? I've 3 degrees, have gone through numerous commission in ceremonies, and have attended a multitude of commencement ceremonies of friends and families. I cannot remember any one Can't remember any key points or stories. The one thing I remember was a General at one event pulling out a thick sheaf of papers and arranging them as if to speak. He then tore them up to "give a talk from the heart" ( though he went on to give one long boring speech).
So I would go with a song, or jokes...or I really like mentalism angle..,

Hey guys, my first comment (to list the song title) was an attempt at an inside joke with Daryl (related to the Song Lyric thread). Sorry it didn't work ... didn't think it would cause such a hubbub!

I would tell the graduates to make their bed, every morning.

What would you say to graduating high school seniors in 2015?
How about my new favorite quote for teenagers: "Graduating students, are you tired of being harassed by your parents? Then act NOW! Move out. Get a job. Pay your own bills. Do it while you still know everything." |

If you really wanted to share the perfect life lesson you could borrow a few words from
Robert Fulghum’s “All I Really Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten.” As you go through life: Share everything. Play fair. Don't hit people. Put things back where you found them. Clean up your own mess. Don't take things that aren't yours. Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody. Wash your hands before you eat. Flush. Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you. Live a balanced life - learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some. Take a nap every afternoon. When you go out into the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands, and stick together. Be aware of wonder. Remember the little seed in the Styrofoam cup: The roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really knows how or why, but we are all like that. Goldfish and hamsters and white mice and even the little seed in the Styrofoam cup - they all die. So do we. And then remember the Dick-and-Jane books and the first word you learned - the biggest word of all - LOOK. Everything you need to know is in there somewhere. The Golden Rule and love and basic sanitation. Ecology and politics and equality and sane living. Tom
