Hi Everyone!

My name is Karl Davies and despite my lack of posts I am not new to this site. I had an old profile 'karlito' which for some reason I cannot access so I thought I'd rejoin. Sadly I have recently let my passion for magic wane becaue of the 9-5 grind of a new job but I'm back and would love to get fully immersed in magic again so please go easy on me Smile

I am creating a weekly newsletter that is completely FREE which I would love to send out to as many people as possible. This is truly a work of love for me.

This newsletter will contain headlines from the world of magic from that week, as well as reviews, new products, local events, FAQ's, weekly new trick explanations, expert interviews, jokes, youtube videos, polls and lots lots more.

The reason why I'm doing this is twofold. I have always had a passion for reading magazines, whether that be videogames magazines, doctor who magazines or magic magazines. I have had a passion for magic for as long as I can remember as well and as a beginner I felt like there should be more magic magazines or easier ways to access information that I desperately craved. I won't lie, one day I would like to make money by being a publisher, but that will be a long way off. This is my answer. It will make me a better writer, distract me from my normal work and also hopefully give you guys a tonne of value for free and no commitment!

So I ask kindly for your help...I would love to know what YOU would like to see in this weekly newsletter. My newsletter will not be SPAM but high quality content but I want it to be very much based on your needs.

You can sign up for it here:

http://eepurl.com/by35HD

Otherwise I would love to hear your opinions below.

Please go easy on me as well as I am born again when it comes to this site!

The questions I would like answering are:

What should the title of my newsletter be?

What content should it include?

What problems do you need solving?

How many pages would be suitable?

If you sign up for the newsletter and post below then please tell me and I will mention your name in the first issue and even promote one of your tricks, products, websites etc for free..

If you would like to work with me long term on the newsletter then just inbox me Smile

Thanks for your help

Hey Karl,

Sounds interesting, I signed up for it.

Possible name idea is a word play on "Amazing" and "E-zine":

Amaezine or Amae-zine.

Just a thought.
Palms are for Aces. Not handshakes.

Hey Steven! Thanks for signing up. I'm still designing it and my first newsletter should be out by the end of this week so watch this space! Cool name by the way, I like the sound of Amaezine or something of that ilk

Sounds interesting. I wouldn't make up a word to use as a title. I would use something like "Conjuring," "Prestidigitation" or "Legerdemain," or something like that.

I would make it more of a newsletter than a magazine. I mean, who reads all those lengthy and ponderous articles in magazines such as Magic Magazine or Genii? I certainly don't.

The trick (pun intended) would be to find your own niche, something you offer that no one else does--easier said than done.

Good luck.

Hey Karl,
Don't mean to be negative but what do "YOU" have to offer? You mentioned you lost your passion for magic and are now getting back into it. We have no idea of your background or experience yet you promise to provide high quality content.
Have you worked In the trenches, performed in restaurants, corporate functions, stage, street etc. ?

I wish you the best but without knowing "you" there are plenty of resources already to add something else to my email inbox.
Good Luck!!

Do it as a blog, not a newsletter. You'll reach a wider audience more quickly and it will be easier to monetise when you get to that stage.

Hi David,

You raise a fair point which I respect and I expected somebody to level this at me. I have performed for over 6 years as a semi-pro in and around my local town. Magic has always been my passion but life sometimes gets in the way. I may not be a big name, perhaps a nobody, nor have I ever created any tricks however I want to give something amazing back to the community and this is my way of doing it.

I don't have to be a well known pro to offer value and good content and we all have to begin somewhere. Once my newsletter is established then I hope you can have a looksy, give me a chance and I'll hopefully prove you wrong Smile

I understand your cynicsm completely and don't intend to offend anyone by saying I can offer value however, I really think there is a gap for something like this .My vision for the newsletter is massive, sort of a one stop press of all the weeks magic news almagamated in one handy letter. My genesis behind it was that I never had time to spend hours on the web looking at stories, reviews , interviews etc and when I was starting out it felt like I was looking for a needle in a haystack. The newsletter I hope will go some way to rectifying this.

It would help if under your "profile" you were to give some information.

Thanks for the interest ThoZ. I'm really happy with the positive response so far.

Some exciting news:

In the fist newsletter there will be reviews of both Peter Eggink and Titanas At The Table Live which are both available at your favorite Murphy’s Magic dealer.

Please visit http://www.murphysmagic.com/atthetable/ for more information.

There will also be an interview feature. The first newsletter will be coming out soon so watch this space

Who is doing the reviews? If you have performed semi professionally for 6 years, lost interest in the art and now getting back into
it and are reviewing, well I would be skeptical. Just being honest. Again what are your credentials that we would trust your
opinions. I'm really not trying to be negative, ( I know it sounds that way) just trying to be realistic. With sites like Kozmo's and others who have real world experience why should I listen to you? We/ I know nothing about you.
Just my opinions and it's good to know the thoughts of others so it could possibly help you.

I applaud your willingness to step in and create something you feel there is a need for.
You just have to be credible, are you and how would one know?

I wish you success.

You don't have to listen to me. I'm not asking you too. But I'm sure there are people out their who will get value from this. You can't please everybody

However, I appreciate your honesty and feedback. However, I hope to prove you wrong. Just because I'm not established and have few credential does not mean I can make one kick ass newsletter. Going by that logic you are saying that only the old rearguard have something to offer and I completely disagree.

"I'm not asking you too." -> "I'm not asking you to."

"Just because I'm not established and have few credential does not mean ..." -> "Just because I'm not established and have few credentials does not mean ..."

If you are going to run a newsletter, you need to be a little more careful with your English.

I can't help but get the feeling that a lot of you reading this are offended or annoyed by my post, which is a shame. I am dsylexic and I feel as though your reply is hostile.

If there is one thing that I cannot stand it's grammar nazis. There is just no need for negativity like that.

I am a genuine guy with a genuine wish to create something cool for amateur/ semi-pro magicians and I expected a friendlier response. I feel slightly disapointed at the response I have had so far. I understand that the magic Café is a defensive beast by nature but I feel as though the motto magicians helping magicians is sometimes forgotten.

I won't let it affect me however, I'll take the advice on board and prove the doubters wrong.

You have to understand the EGO factor here. It's BIG and a beast here. And grammar- well yes, you do need to have good grammar in your newsletter- but keep in mind- the majority of instructions I receive for an effect that is magic/mentalism related are riddled with bad grammar. But that's not an excuse for you to follow suit. I applaud your efforts for chasing one of your dreams. This in itself is a great accomplishment as many do not even attempt to chase one of their dreams. So put forth your best effort, ignore the negativity here while you will find some genuine people here who will help you.

Stay focused and steadfast!

If I were a "grammar nazi," I'd have to spend my entire life correcting the grammar and spelling of the posts here on the Café. I worked in publishing for 30 years, and the only reason I pointed out your errors is because you are proposing to start a newsletter, and a newsletter deals in language, and your posts are a reflection of your competence (or not) in this area.

Sorry if you were offended, but I don't understand, if you are planning to start a project, why you need the opinion of others before you even start. Why not just put together your newsletter, announce its inception, and then solicit opinions as to value of your offering. This is all theoretical right now, and nobody knows who you are.

Yes, I agree, put out Vol. 1, number 1, and then see how it goes. You need connections and popular names in magic to contribute to your news letter.

Do you know that most magazines are all set at least a year in advance. Only some space is left for current announcements. You are asking us to sign up for something that you don't have even started.

Try it, if it does not pan out, get another 9 to 5 job.

Hmmm. You're proposing to do a newsletter but hate grammar nazis which screams to me that you don't find proper grammar to be important. I can't speak for anyone else but when I read a published work I expect it to be correctly written and edited. If it's not, I don't care how good the content is I won't be a subscriber. Your background or lack thereof is of little importance if you have something to say and you are a good writer then you can be successful. Also I'm not sure I'm understanding your request for feedback yet. Write the first issue and then ask. As of now no one can give you much instructive criticism because we have nothing to see. Best of luck.
