Are there any unbiased, trustworthy news outlets any more? Most lean left, a few lean right, and many are nothing more than versions of TMZ claiming to be newscasts. In fact, my local news runs stories from TMZ, as well as the result of reality shows like "Dancing with the Stars" DURING THE NEWSCAST. Other news stories are the cute little bunny that was saved from the sewage pipe after 4 hours, or the current flavor-of-the-day cataclysmic "sky is falling" political scare story. The yellow journalism of 100 years ago is nothing compared to today. I think it all started when Walter Cronkite got the "big head" and started turning his newscasts into editorials.
Does real, unbiased ethical news reporting still exist? |

In journalism we used to say that if you were good enough you worked for a good daily paper. If you weren't that good, you went to radio. If you weren't good enough for radio you ended up in television. And for those not even that good, there was sports.
The problem is that television, the bottom of the heap in terms of talent and actual content, pays the best. And any industry where the top earners are the thickest of the thick is bound to suffer. And now we have internet news, the absolute nadir of an already declining industry. In the good old days a news editor assigned the journalist a story, often after a meeting of the news room. So some thought went into what was worthy of covering and what was not. Then, once the journalist had written the story, a sub editor worked on it, fact-checking, correcting and polishing. Then the editor okayed the final version. Quality control all the way. Internet journalists operate in a vacuum without those quality controls. (They also operate with a vacuum between the ears, but that is another matter). That is why journalism, a once noble profession, is now in the doldrums.

When I was young, journalists were seen as part of societies checks and balances. There are very few real real journalists today. What passes for the news today is pathetic. "Say tuned, you won't believe what this firefighter found next to the freeway" God, shoot me now.*

Actually, I long for the days of Walter Cronkite. It was his so called "editorials" that showed Americans, for the first time, the truth about the war in Vietnam. He hardly had a "big head," he simply spoke truth to power. He is, along with Edward R. Murrow, one of the greatest television journalists of our time.
And in case you didn't get the word, the myth of the "liberal media" is just that- a myth. http://www.politicususa.com/2014/09/20/m......ows.html |

My tastes are pretty simple.
I'd be happy if today's written journalism simply used correct spelling and grammar. |

Hardly surprising that the New York Times asserts (as opposed to finds ) the lack of a liberal basis. On the other hand, there are admittedly liberal members of the media who are willing to admit to a liberal bias, in their view, such as Andy Rooney, who notably called Tom Brokaw, for instance, "transparently liberal." And Brokaw wasn't hosting talk shows.

My mother was a journalist. She told me that a newspaper once offered her a job writing the weekly Zodiac predictions. She said she knew nothing about the subject. They told her, "You don't have to. Just make up something." She declined.

It's too easy to find news sources that mirror your own political sensibilities and, once they find such outlets, that's what they stick with. Few people consume news content from sources they don't "agree" with.
Most cable news outlets especially have become such "echo chambers", doing their viewers -- and society -- a true disservice. |

Things have changed so much since I joined NPR in the early 1970's. I saw the changes there first-hand, but I still believe it is one of the most balanced news organizations in the world. Strangely, when I mention NPR, I find almost an equal number of people who think the network is 'liberal' as those who think it is 'conservative', which to me indicates it is still reasonably balanced in reporting.
For a great insider's view of a modern day descendent of Ed Murrow and Walter Cronkite, read Bob Edwards' wonderful autobiography "A Voice In The Box : My Life In Radio". I worked with Bob for years and always found him frank and funny with a dry humor balanced with common sense journalistic integrity.

I heard Chomsky make an off-hand comment that the press is freer and less prone to manipulation in those (democratic) countries that do not wield an enormous amount of international clout. IIRC two examples he gave were Canada and Australia.

The international TV Channel, MHZ, features newscasts representing the views of various countries. French, German, Russian, Asian, etc. Each of these has their own particular slant on world news stories. For me, that's the best way to "read between the lines" about current events.
