Can I get advice on pants/trousers for coin magicians? Since the age of about 12, I've worn jeans as a default - often even in "business casual" situations. It's just my "go-to" pair of pants. But since I started learning magic (I'm about 10 months down the road - at age 51:)), and since coin magic is my primary area of magical interest, I have found jeans to be both a help and a hinderance.
For example, I LOVE LOVE LOVE having the little watch pocket built into the main front right pocket. I can fit a LOT of coins in there for quick and easy access, and they don't jingle and bounce around in my pocket like they do when I try to put a bunch of coins into slacks/dress pants. HOWEVER, the access to the pockets on slacks/dress pants is MUCH more convenient for quickly ditching a coin. The pocket slits are much more vertical than horizontal, which puts them closer to where my hand would more naturally be when hanging by my side. So I'm looking for some guidance on what experienced magicians typically wear. If you wear a suit, how do you keep coins from jingling around (I guess a coin purse, but that makes them harder to get to)? And if you don't wear dress pants - but prefer the casual, off-the-cuff magic-at-the-bar stuff, how do you quickly ditch a coin (or anything) into a pocket? Does anyone have special pockets sewn in? Are there special "magician's jeans"? (I wonder if there would be demand for that....hmmm:))? Thanks! Ken |

Hi Ken. I wear a jacket to perform, and my coins are held snugly by Secret Servante, which can attach to any jacket quickly and without any tailoring etc. Do check out the extensive thread on SS on the Café for more information.

I wouldn't say I have a ton of experience, but I've worked restaurants, done quite a few private parties, and with that, I do quite a bit of knuckle busting coin work. When I perform, I wear a suit, and every day casual, I wear jeans. Yes, slacks are more comfortable for ditching and all but it doesn't really bother me. My right front pants pocket contains 5 regular morgan dollars, the watch pocket has a thumb tip and a little Listerine spray. Despite that, I never really hear any jingling. I always use to think that my coins would jingle so I carried them in a coin purse, but there were routines I wanted to just steal coins from my pocket and go in to it without taking out a coin purse so I ditched the purse, and was surprised to hear that the coins really didn't jingle like I thought.

I wear whatever.
I studied Apollo Robbins' ditching and picking a lot, what he does is create a climax, and then he has all the time in the world to put his hand in his pocket and ditch the coin, and for getting something from his pocket he would ask a spectator to hold out their hands and while the attention is on their hands, he would reach for his own pocket. That way every time he needs to take or put something in his pocket there is already a sort of tool-of-misdirection in his inventory. You can see it clearly in his coin on shoulder routine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKZlesut-Pk On a different subject, the pants we had in the army had HUGE pockets that you could literally walk around with two hard cover books in your pockets and it would feel natural. So, being soldiers who have to pay real money for lost equiptment, these working pants were quite infamous for being great for stealing from the logistics warehouses when you were told to clean them, or as the act is called in the army: "refilling equiptment". So yeah, these pants could have came in handy for coin magic! |

Cargo pants have many pockets in a casual environment.
gabardine work pants also can pass with a sports coat and are roomier than jeans and easily gaffed in a number of ways.

Hi Ken - here's a quick vid of me performing one of my fav coin routines using SS - 4 coin production, coins across, 3 coin vanish and a jumbo production to conclude. As I mentioned before, I wear a jacket during performance so not really using pocket management for my coins. Not a brilliant video but hope you get the idea! https://youtu.be/6f0v1x6NAnA

David - that was the kind of thing I was wondering about. What kinds of special additions or alterations magicians make to clothing. Thanks for that tip:).

Yea I go to Used Places ( For some Reason There Is a ton of them In Denver Co. ) And Find black Vest And coats With no Pockets In then! Then Go to my Tailor And have 7" By 7" Pockets Put on the bottom And 4' by 4' Put on the top! Then Have a Topit And outer Pockets Put on the Inside. Now for around $ 200.00 I have a Vest or coat I can Use! And that will hold loads without looking Like it! I did A lecture One time Where I Just came In Took off my vest And showed Where I put everything! I Have Been Going to the Same Tailor For over 30 years! I started Out with And old man Who had been doing it for 25 or so years. And Now His Daughter Has Taken over! At 1 St. he did not What I was talking about! But I cut out Paper Pockets And pined Then in the vest To show him! And we talked it Out! Now I just bring in a old Vest and say Do it just Like this! The cost is going up! I think It was $ 240.00 For My last Coat. But I have a GOOD working Coat! Something I can Use! And if I went Into A Man's Store It would Cost around the same! But I would Not have something I could use! So Look around! and good luck!

Hi Ken,
Your welcome! And yea Around 30 or so years Ago I met A lady One night At the Magic Castle Who did The Tailoring For Sylvester! He carry's Tons Of coins In coin clips For some of his stuff! As well as A lot of his outer stuff! And I told Her I was interested In putting Pocket's In my Vest And my Coats! And So the Next day I took my vests and my Coats And the stuff I wanted to carry In them! And she showed me Where everything Should go! And where everything should Hang! So the coat does not Hang Wrong! And I have been Using That Patten Now for the last 30 or so years! So yea You can get good Used Out A Reg. Tailor, But if You can find Some one In Magic Who also does Tailoring You Will thank your self for it! |
