I'm currently in the process of trying to write a more interesting and sincere script for my coins across routine. My goal is to try and figure out something that doesn't come across as particularly corny or silly, yet still seems justified so that things make sense...
Either way; could anyone share the main idea of the story or plot that you tend to present for yours? I'm just trying to get some inspiration to think more outside the box. I really don't know if I should tell them that the coins are "invisibly jumping" or "teleporting" what can make sense and be interesting but just doesn't sound too silly? If you feel like your presentation is silly, please say so as well... I have no criteria in what I'm asking you to respond with, I'd just like to hear how you present yours. Thanks! |

When I think of a patter line to a trick, I try to use an emotional hook to reel in the people. So, it would be a story about myself or something people can relate to, or just a play by play after setting the premise. Do not do a story no one can identify with, such as a story about King Arthur, etc. My own coins across in love talking about picking up jumping coins, a circus act, or just set a premise of an impossible situation.
S.E.M. (The Sun, the Moon, and the Earth) is a sun and moon routine unlike any other. Limited to 100 sets, here is the promo:

Thanks, Michael. I understand what you're saying; Eugene Burger had said "Every good trick has a opening line and a closing line" well, and much more as well, but that quote has stuck with me for quite some time. I often find in my magic that is usually presented clearly and isn't confusing but it just doesn't have the emotional impact as something like Eugene would perform.
I'll start brainstorming based on what you told me. Thank you! |

I have never liked adding a story to a trick. It always comes across as shallow. Either tailor and effect around a story, meaning you have the story first, or just present it as a trick. You can, however, add the elements and structure of a story to a trick.

I ask if they have heard the expression "Time flies". Then I ask if they have heard that "Time is money". I continue with "Therefore money should fly". Let's see if that's true. I usually comment that my wife has already proven this at the shopping center, but let's see if we can demonstrate it now. I heard this somewhere, but don't remember where.

I don't vouch for the flashing and lousy technique, but you might find a premise something along these lines amusing:

What is the sense of the routine to you?
sincerely, why are you doing that? what do you believe would be of interest to your audience? one path: perform the routine for audiences as a work in progress with a minumum of presentation and listen to their feedback and interpretations. Audience members can have useful feedback on the presentation/script side of magic.

I usually talk about time travel. They started here long ago, and the can travel through a time passage...

I had come up with the "time flies, time is money, money flies" presentation idea after reading on Raymond Smullyan's logic; it wasn't until years later that I discovered Cody Fisher had also used that...didn't realize it was David Acer's idea.
I then mention that on Wall Street, money changes hands when a bell is rung...and I have the spectator ring a small bell I use for the routine.

"I'm going to break some rules of magic here. I am going to tell you what is going to happen before it happens. And magicians never do that. And I am going to repeat it for you. And magicians never do that. So, watch close, this all happens very quickly. What's going to happen is one of the 3 coins here will travel from my hand, up my sleeve, across my chest and end up about...here. See! Told you it was quick. Have a look at the coin, all OK? No trapdoors or hidden midgets? OK, two coins left. This second one, because you know what is going to happen, I will use aural misdirection. Calm down, I said aural. Now, listen and you hear the second coin arrive. Maybe you think I am just being clever with my hands. So you hold your hand out. All three coins on your hand. Just one coin left to travel, close your hand round the remaining two coins and watch. You really see the coin in my hand, yet, a little rub and it's gone. Open up your hand. SHAZAAAAM MOTHERFUNSTER!

I enjoyed reading this thread. I'll start writing scripts and memorizing them to an extent. The patter and presentation are just as hard as the sleights for me.

Hi bombaclot,
Just read your Dec 1st 2015 posting. I have been performing David Roth's coins across for around 6 years with a very similar patter to yours. Obviously we think in a similar manner. Enjoy the experience, All the very best Michael. |
