About the rotation on the flying carpet; it may seem obvious to the audience if you just spin it. But think about the possibilities to that extra feature. You can use one of the swords to spin the carpet on its point, or even your finger. I don't know if the swords will fit though, but try coming up with some other ideas. Hope this helped a bit!

I use this effect as an upsell in all my kids shows... it works great and the kids and parents really love it. The only pain is that it is bulky to lug around. I can justify it cause I get paid more to bring it out. I have used the spin but I think it takes away from the illusion.
what kind of music would you use with this??? |

Well, this is what I found on their web sites:
Mak Magic sells a Princess Carpet, it turns. The weight limits state 110lb in the ad but 125lb at the bottom of the page. http://www.makmagic.com/Sections/product......064#disp Dayton;s site has both: Princess, rotates, ALUMINUM, weight 140lb? $399 Sultan's, no rotate, limit 120lb...$450 http://daytonamagic.net/customer/index.c......tId=7715 ebay: sultan, no rotate, 120lb limit....$225 buy it now. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie......amp;rd=1 Normally one is available for less than $300 on ebay. You can also set it up with a backdrop curtain and remove both the swords and the screen.
Nothing would get done at all, if man waited so long that no one could find fault with it.

I have been using the effect for over two decades. I originally bought it from MAK thru a local dealer. I had to replace the Particle board Table top and bottom about ten years ago. I replaced them with 3/4 inch plywood to give it solidity. I had taken out the turntable gimmick many years before. It wobbled and made the kids nervous. I do not believe it adds anything to the illusion.
When I replaced the boards I made the base a little wider, again to add stability. I put on heavy duty castors that lock to make it easier to roll and more stable when in place. I also added a square of ply wood directly under the table top to raise it up a bit. That 3/4 of inch does make a difference. The stapled on fringe started to look ratty fairly quickly and I just tore it off. I have used two large, inexpensive, scarves- NOT SILKS- to cover the table top and base. (see picture at left) The swords also did not hold up well in transport. I have replaced them with inexpensive swords from the flea market. They were $10 each. I bought heavy duty cabinet magnets at home depot to make it easier to hold them in place since they are heavier then the original swords. My new swords do have the advantage of being "real" and look better. I love the trick and use it in most of my shows. A couple of years ago I started to use it as an "up charge". However, I think that the pictures of the birthday child make great word of mouth advertising. I know that I have gotten calls: "are you the guy that floated the kid at his birthday party? Can you do it w/my kid too?" It is NOT angle proof at all. You must be very careful about set up & teardown to not tip the gaff. This is more important in teardown then set up. During set up I lay the table on it's side till I am ready to put it up right and no one knows what they are looking at. In tear down however, Care must be taken because it is THE closer. I have what I believe is the best way to handle the angles and cover it up at the end. Send $10 in an envelope to.... Just kidding I have a long, heavy, satin cape that I put on for the trick. Once I am behind the table it covers the angles. At the end of the trick, as I "return the child to the earth from whence he came" I walk forward draping the cape over the table. I untie the cape from my neck and it falls over the table completely covering it and all that goes w/it. When I am feeling really brave, I will place my leg in front of the gimmick and take the screen away completely. Rarely so I do this in performance, but it makes for a great picture. (again, C - left) The only time I have ever used my assistant for the trick is in rehearsal or for pictures. (She is beautiful isn't she? Unfortunately, she is away at college and the outfit won't fit my other daughter.) Yes, it is a pain to schlep the table w/the swords and the screen. I can't tell you the joy I have had carrying it up several flights of stares to get to some gigs. I still would have to tell any magician in my area that is thinking of getting it: "no, it's terrible, don't get it. People hate it. They will never remember it anyway".

The flying carpet is a cool illusion. I recently turned one down for real good price because I am at the age where Iam tring to scale back the amount of weight I carry to my home shows.

Mark,
My girlfriend in highschool made it for me with the help of her mother in 1978. I took her to the several fabric stores before we picked out the outer and inner fabrics. I have never seen the Mark Wilson tape. I hope no one thinks I "stole" the idea! People can get touchy in this fourum about that.

Gene DeVoe also had something to do with some of the modifications of the Flying Carpet.
Get the Jim Sommers illusion book. There are some good ideas in that one for this illusion. One thing I'd like to point out, though. When you perform illusions such as the Flying Carpet and the Jigsaw volunteer sawing in people's houses and in their offices, you really run the risk of ruining these illusions for the guys who do stage illusion shows. Please, please, please be extra careful with your angles and your setup. One of the best ways to cut down on angle problems with this type of illusion is to set up in the corner of the room. Also, use a screen as a shield while setting up. It helps preserve the mystery.

I haven't seen the tape either, but what if you rest the cape on the illusion. Then when someone sits on it just pull the cape back and say, "you need to dress the part of a magician." Then tie the neck of the cape on the child loosely, while letting it hang in back covering view of the ****. I have the "Sultan" version and it allows you to set it up so the screen is pulled to the very corner, so a little of the **** is exposed. I would like to keep this covered at all times.

I like that idea with the cape. I am going to modify mine flying carpet with the velvet. By the way, exactly what is Triple Velvet and where can you get it?

Another finesse if you will that I have begun using with my flying carpet is this. Th workings are covered beforehand with several large scarves. Just prior to peforming the illusion I perform a squared circle. The silks from this routine are then heaped onto the table of the flying then when I have the child in mid-air I am able to completely remove the screen and the combination of the silks and scarves provides cover for the workings.
Recently I performed this for a packed theater when we were done and the child and I went off stage the child spoke the words I long to hear, "I really did it, I was flying, wow!" If this is not in your repertoire it should be. |

The folks at FedEx lost our Flying Carpet in shipment. You would not believe how people look at you when you turn in a claim for a missing Flying Carpet!
The FedEx people have always been very kind to me. They did pay us for the missing Flying Carpet. Have any of you seen it anywhere? LOL Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Bob…
I last saw your flying carpet whizzing past the Golden Gate Bridge here, I called FedEx but they took too long and it seemed headed up toward Seattle. Magically, Walt |

I have one of these in my closet that I bought several years ago, but I have never used.
One of the swords has a small bend in it, but other than that it is just like new. Too bulky of an illusion to carry around unless you have a truck. |
