If I may say - I wish the OP would have used a *FAR* less dramatic or jarring headline for the subject.
"Max Maven has Appendix Successfully Removed" or "Max Maven Recovering From Appendicitis" (or similar) would have been so much cooler and far more ACCURATE... I had mine removed about 5 years ago and it is a simple & routine procedure with little downtime if caught early. There is a MASSIVE difference between having an appendix removed and a "Max Maven Illness." When I see an "Illness" headline like that I (and many others here) might incorrectly assume something much more serious. So to Jerry the OP - thanks so much for letting us all know - but to him and others posting in the future - perhaps it might be best to more carefully think out your subject line so as not to exaggerate or distort the nature of what is happening.

Jerry please grow up and take a look in the mirror.
There's a massive difference between an illness and a minor appendix procedure. Words matter. Headlines matter. Thinking things through matters. I'm sure everyone knows you had a good intent. No question. But words matter and your headline words should have perhaps been more judiciously chosen. Max is a much beloved member of the community. If you want to act the part now of the misunderstood do gooder rather than taking a constructive criticism - be my guest and go hide if that's what you choose to do.

Frankly, from personal experience, making this surgery out to be "minor" is being little pollyanna. There can be major issues. Some quite serious. "Illness" is. the correct descriptive. Maybe a little scary to some though

My dad had his appendix out. He was very ill beforehand and I wouldn't have called it minor. I hope Max has a speedy recovery.

Knowing how often there are posts about beloved members here in the community that have been diagnosed with cancer and the many passings of members of our communities that occur here on a regular basis, I too thought it was presented poorly. Also I know without a doubt, after being concerned for Max's well-being, that the immediate next thought that came to many members mind was "oh no, I wonder if he'll still be able to be at Minvention." Many members have invested thousands of dollars to attend this year solely due to Max being honored and featured. Many flying into Vegas from around the world. Many working hard and saving all year for this "once in a lifetime" event. So to see the headline of this post, I'm sure many got a huge knot in their stomachs and great concern for this bigger picture as well. I too appreciate learning about the information about Max,but also thought it was presented a bit unnecessarily. |

I had appendicitis myself 5 years ago Joe and had mine removed too.
I'm Very very personally familiar with it and the possible complexities - especially if not caught in time. However If caught in time it is one of the most routine and safe procedures done today. An illness denotes something far more serious. My point is that it would be great if experienced Café users could put just a smidgen of thought into their headlines - just as a reporter would. This is an age of information, social media and info moving at the speed of light. As Mindoro correctly stated my instant thought after reading the headline was "uh oh - I wonder if Max will miss Mindvention." Let's choose our words carefully as there is power within them.

According to Merriam-Webster defines illness:
a condition of being unhealthy in your body or mind a specific condition that prevents your body or mind from working normally Nothing dramatic there and applicable to title of the post. I stand by what I had post. I am not a reporter. saysold1 - interesting it took you five days to discover my egregious error. And no, I am not going to hide from you. I just wish Max Maven the best, and a full recovery. That was the intent, leave at that and move on. |

Appendicitis is an acute illness, glad Max is on the mend. |

Can we please move on. The original post was accurate and not alarmist. It could also have been posted as "...emergency operation" and still have been accurate. The illness was remote enough from the Mindvention dates that he should be able to attend. no guarrentee. Had the emergency operation occured this weekend he most certainly would not have been able to. It is fortunate we live in a day that we consider acute appendicitis an ailment easily treated. That is not always the case. There are still patients who experience very complicated operations, reoperations, extended ICU support, and death related to the appendicitis itself or their underlying health conditions which destabilize related to the stress of the acute intestinal process. We all wish 'Mr Mavin' a complete and speedy recovery as we do all in our community who suffer.
