Appendicitis seems to fly under the radar these days. Apparently considered so minor it's being missed in diagnosis- my sister asked the doctor directly if she had appendicitis this summer and he gave her a flat out no. I don't think he even put it in the differential diagnosis, even though that is indeed what she was suffering from. It's a dangerous condition still today and I suggest dismissive attitudes might be responsible for increasing complications for patients like my sister. After a week in hospital, she ended up going home in toxic shock with a septic abdomen. After returning to the ER via ambulance, she was left over an hour and a half and the doctor left her unexamined at shift change. He stood 20 feet away discussing her with the next shift doctor, saying, "There's a lady with abdo pain I haven't seen. She's not pregnant, so I don't think it's an ectopic or anything horrible like that." Went on to discuss what kind of paycheck he might get for the day, something about "rural incentive" and did the next doctor have any idea? Yikes. The next doc, though, was on the ball and examined Tracey right away. "Illness" hardly overstates the condition. And if you've got the majority of docs you're seeing dismissing appendicitis, it's an illness and then some.
All the best, Max. |

Since I have first-hand knowledge of this, I shall explain the details. The doctor told Max that if he had waited until the following morning to go to the hospital, as opposed to calling an ambulance in the middle of the night, his appendix might have ruptured.
So, it was indeed on the more serious end of the "appendix" scale. That said, I saw Max this past weekend and he is as good as new. |

I had a wonderful one on one breakfast with Max at mindvention and it was very enjoyable.
Appendicitis is always serious if not caught early. It was caught in time. That's a good thing. I've had it and know the whole drill.

What a coincidence. I heard that Phil Goldstein had the same operation on the same day...
