I am a huge fan of impossible physical manipulations of items (TnR, bending, etc) and I was wondering what good effects of that type could be done with a single borrowed coin. I like performing bent coin, signed karate coin (i love Daniel Garcia's handling), breaking coins in half, gradual material changes (involving lots of successive switches), and the chocolate coin gag explained on one of Michael Ammar's easy to master money miracles. Does anybody know of any other effects involving the manipulation of the physical properties of coins? I think they are nice add ons to more traditional coin routines where I borrow coins.

When the state quarters came out, there was a company that was selling gold-plated state quarter sets. If you can find some, you can use a state quarter and a piece of gold foil, wrap it up, "put" it in the spec's hand and have them squeeze, and end up with a gold-plated quarter that they can keep. I often do this for the person who hired me when I do walk around.

Thanks for the suggestions! As for silver extraction, it looks like the gimmick only comes for half dollars, which people don't carry with them any more. I could try making clear quarters out of resin one day; let's see how that goes. (And what a souvenir!). Mint also looks spectacular, but doesn't utilize a borrowed coin. It's still a really awesomely visual effect and I plan on looking into it a bit more. MagieFraudster, I really love that idea! I actually plate my own quarters (with copper) for the gradual material change and I know a method for making them look noticeably golden (compared to an actual gold coin they are noticeably paler, though). There is also a method for making pennies look silver and gold, and I'm thinking up an alchemy themed trick
Combining the ideas from silver extraction and the MagieFraudster's foil fusion, I'm thinking it would be cool to wrap aluminum/silver foil around a clear quarter and after a quick swap and an initialing of the coin, semi-visibly (don't want to make it too obvious) pull the silver off of the quarter, complete with the signature. (Two souvenirs!) Thanks so much! Chris |

You can see my version of silver extraction on my Penguin Live lecture, available as a download or DVD from Penguin. Also in the NYCMS DVD series. Also, see my trick Fusion, sold through myself or at your local magic deale. Here is the routine:

Thanks, Michael! I really loved fusion when I saw it, but I especially love giving out souvenirs, which you can't do with Fusion. I'm not that big a fan of undoing the effect at the end, but the fused coin looks so beautiful, I just wish I could leave it with the spectator (If I'm in a room, you can be certain that after an hour people are going to be left with a variety of funky coinage). Fusion is short enough to use as a sort of opener for another trick with the borrowed quarter, so I will definitely get it (I just hope it doesn't outshine whatever follows!) I noticed that it's not available on Penguin right now, though.
I also consider myself a collector of Penguin Live lectures (joke, but I do have quite a few) and yours is definitely on the list of ones I need to get. |

Actually there was one performer who handed out the fused coin at his gigs. He bought them in bulk, and the money he made at his performances made up for the few bucks spent for the souvenir. I really like the separation though, very magical!
