I cannot decide what to buy. Any input would be greatly appreciated. How long a string is the Tannen set for? How much can it lift and can it handle the self knoting rope? How about the silk through the mic stand, is it fast enough? Thanks in advance Magic Tad

I do not own either of the brands you mention, but I do own several reels, a utility reel is usually 32" in length. The stealth retractor is something else altogether.
The utility reel can be used for the serpent silk effect and penetrations. The retractor is a battery operated bill snatcher, it has a very long bobon full of line. You cannot do serpent silk or penetrations with it. |

I was trying to find one for rope and silk magic that is quiet and easy to work with can you tell me the brand you like and were to look for one. Thanks Magic Tad
I just found the P & M reel (Petrick & Mia's) It sounds good but it is so large. Does any one use this kind. Magic Tad |

Magic Tad,
You can look for a Paul Diamond Reel. No brake but you do not need one for any Serpent Silk Routine or Rope Routine. That may be hard to find so you can contact Denny and Lee in Essex, Maryland. He always has a couple of good reels about. He's also a wealth of knowledge. Most of it gained by 'working the boards' for many years. Talk to Denny. He'll give you good advice. Reels by Owen Magic, P&L, Kirkendall have brakes but can also be used for the routines you describe. Start doing some research. Perhaps start with the Paul Diamond video specifically on Reels. Take Care, Vincent Just another quick thought. Get yourself a copy of "Reel Magic" by Albenice. Still in print and also available at Denny and Lee's. Rice's Encyclopedia Of Silk Magic is also a great resource. There are many out there. Just a little time and effort to locate them. Vincent |

Here is the site:
http://www.dennymagic.com Also try Tannen's Magic, they made some quality reels a few years ago. Cannot find on their website now. Daytona magic has a reel made of plastic that could be repaired for $6. There search engine is not working so I could not find it for you. If you cannot find a finger reel try this one from El Duco sold by Hank Lee. http://hanklee.org/xcart/customer/produc......p;page=1 'Finger Reels' are very rare items now a days. I own P&L, Ken Brooke, Repo Magic, and Kirkendall double reel for card suspension. Hang onto one if you can find one. It is a wonder why a stable in magic that always gets good reaction from an audience is not available. |

Kennedy Hummingbird Reel is a good alternative to the old fashioned P&L type utility reel. It allows bill snatches as well as pentrable silk, flying bars, self-knotting & un-knotting, etc. Find it at Bob James Magic Shop (http://www.bobjamesmagic.com/) and other spots.

Have you had any problems with the Kenedy Hummingbird reel? I read a review that said it got tangled a lot. I realy like this reel but could not deal with tangles. Let me know. Thanks Magic Tad

I would also be interested in knowing whether there is tangle issues with the Kennedy Hummingbird Reel.
Thanks

My hummingbird has never tangled. Had it several years now. Very dependable even though the button fell off somewhere soon after I got it.

I second El Duco Swedish reel. I've seen Michael Ammar use it and he was kind enough to let me handle it.
Whisper quiet and has a brake. One will soon be in my hands. Have not seen any of the others but will certainly look into them. Thank you for this thread. |

For you guys that work with reels, I want to alert you to the fact that my column for the July or August 2011 issue of MUM will be the explanation of my super-clean version of a silk penetration through a cane.
