Ok, just did my first PKD/Blade Runner-esque performance of how tech use may be transforming the human condition into something not as human as we used to be....
Anyway, along with my usual activities, I added in a Voight-Kampff test with homemade replica machine, and various other goodies. I closed the activities by adding in a BR themed presentation to Asi Wind's Catch 23 (which I love).... (so, I guess first thing you might ask is that Mentalism or Mental Magic how it is presented...or Magic... as you could leave it as "fate" or "mental influence" or etc)... So, earlier in the proceedings I did a math bit ala Marc Paul and created a unique # with special meaning - demoing the concept of "are you really making free choices or have you been subtly been programmed...?" So, for those familiar with the Asi Wind C23... here are the small mods - as in the film BR, there are 4 replicant/android Nexus 6's on the loose - and throughout the presentation via the VKT I have identified 4 people who seem to be the most likely candidates of being 4 androids. So, we do this final test - they go through the envelope choosing.... and then they create a unique 4 digit # by their choices. First reveal - the envelope I am left with is opened and out pops an Owner's Certificate for a Tetrad Pack of Nexus-6 Androids - serial # matching the # chosen before. On the back of the owner cert. is the Pin # that matches the 4 digit # of the 4 participants. "Use if they get out of hand!".... Each participant opens up their envelopes "You are the only Female Android" is in the only woman participant's hands and etc. to the "You are an Android named X" .... So, this is not predicting future events - it is presented as the people had no choice but to choose things because they are preprogrammed androids... of course at the end, I say this has all been meta-fictional role-playing - but how much do they get programmed by media and int. reinforcing tech signals to become predictable and malleable to outside influences (which I demo'd throughout the presentation in various ways).... Mentalism? Magic? Cognitive Science with Roleplay? Bizarre Techno Magick? It really doesn't matter to me - as I have fun doing this regardless and my audiences seem to enjoy my strange take on things.... but since there are so many M,M, M & MM MM etc. threads about - I figured I might as well start one too... (Aside: the VKT questions went over so well, I'll be piloting them again at another conference next week - if they love them too - I'll post them up for actual use for how intwined people have become with smartphones.) (Aside aside: I now have enough pilot from various presentations to do an entire PKD show - DADOES/BR , Valis, Ubik and Total Recall.... I really had fun creating the Ubik Spray can that transforms regressed matter back into modern forms!)....

As a bizarrist, I love it. I don't care if it falls under magic or mentalism; it sounds like solid entertainment and story-telling to me.

I would have to see it.... but reading it I found it had too much story around it. Personally the effects I find have the strongest impact have the least back story..
Trying to be too clever for me I would imagine mentalism or the illusion of real ability would need little story........ Then again you might be really good at telling stories but for me it would lessen the impact of the effect. Doesn't mean it wouldn't entertaining though.. |

But you didn't answer the question. (Anyway, wasn't asking for a critique of story - and the actually material is quick to explain and this is at the end and runs as long as running Catch 23 - so there is little difference in terms of length of verbiage. Also its a closer so everyone has backstory from 50 minutes of elements before it.)

It seems like punk bizarre for me, but if I had to choose a label it would be awesome! I love PKD universe and I also have made a few related props .

I'm with those who does not think any label is necessary. People have always been ready to accept that things happen in the universe they don't understand.
Modern technology may have closed off some types of imagination and opened others. What will seem probable today?? You could mention in passing that some might call this magic, or precognition or divine intervention and leave it up to the individual. You are demonstrating an interesting phenomenon. Will they be entertained? Yes. Do they need a cause? No. as always, "what comes next" may be of concern.

I love this routine Dr Spektor and can see it being very entertaining...at least for me. I love the notion that we may not be the people we think we are. Or be in the world we believe we are in. Of course it's been studied and debated for centuries, and appears as an underlying theme quite often in literature and film...but not much in magic to my knowledge. Presented right - as I'm sure you do - I for one would be on the edge of my seat wondering if I was a replicant.
Perhaps this is Metaphysical Magic, Ontological Magic?

Sci-Fi Mindreading? Seems if you were looking to bill the show, you would need some type of recognizable word in there.
I have come up with a few though: Distopian Deduction Replicant Recognition Mental Programming Magic This sounds great. Let us know if you ever near Dallas, I would love to see this show. |

This has something to do with the OP?
But I'll answer! For this particular presentation - Free (subsidized) event for the public - an annual event - primarily for university, college and final year high school students and faculty - for battling stigma and raising awareness for mental health. We do get offered a few K as speakers but I give it back to the cause. I've done it annually. Ok, if you ask the # of people who come for my presentations at this event its averaged about 200 people ( there are 4 events going on simultaneously at anytime throughout the day and an open "expo" of sorts). You won't find me performing the usual circles most around here do (although I have done shows at Stratford, Canadian Stage etc. in the past) - mine are usually part of various conferences aimed to support various healthcare causes. So I do not claim to be a mentalist nor a professional entertainer either. So, what about the OP question?
