Good morning gentle friends,
In discussion on another site for odd and unusual mystery performance I brought up the use and collecting of taseomancy cups. I was surprised at how few people knew what they were or that they even existed. I am kindling this discussion here to see where we go with this. Presently I have a small piece I created to use with a specific cup and saucer design. It is put forward as a 'test' of the participants sensitivity and perception. Simple but effective and coupled with a lovely vintage bone china tasseomancy cup it is elegant. I enjoy using objects that are tangible and ordinary to demonstrate extraordinary events. Tasseomancy cups are unusual but not in an extraordinary way. They have a common known backstory in terms of function - these are for telling fortunes / making predictions. So the object introduces itsself. No need for convoluted stories about an object having extraordinary provenance - no ancient curses or inherited from obscure ancestors or mystical organisations. I believe this makes the object clean and the experience less likely to be a trick in the beholders mind - even if it is one. There were hundreds of different commercially manufactured tea leaf reading cups with different systems and styles. Some are exceptionally rare. A quick search should bring you a selection of different styles - most commom ones from the 50's and 60's The issue is that most have too much potential information on them. Symbols, astro signs, numbers, pictures etc. This makes them unsuitable for a person looking at them for the first time - under pressure as all participants are when called up to do something in front of other people. I have found one particular cup design that simplifies that and gives us less quantity of information to have to sort through I am interested to see if anyone else uses these cups in any performance - or has any additional ideas a out using them. I will be publishing the little piece I perform amd the specific make of cup that is needed later this week.
